Just a question - Would it, hypothetically, be legal for the US family to sponsor the overseas family member on an H2B visa? This visa can be used to hire a caregiver... it's a non-immigrant visa, but would allow the son to work as a caregiver legally, for some temporary amount of time. 

I don't know anything about whether or not this would be legal, but it's something to check out. Being able to do that for some significant period of time might buy enough time for his priority date to become current.

Just trying to think outside the box.
