I don't think that's strictly accurate.  Yeah, you don't have a RIGHT to be let in to the country as a non-citizen (what about as a citizen?), but hopefully you do have a right not to be tortured, killed, held for ransom, and so forth.

I don't really have anything awful to hide either, in the sense of something like drug-smuggling or child-pornography, but what if they decide not to let me (or anyone) in because they don't like my politics?  Just look at how divisive this discussion has gotten because some think it is blaming the current president for something that was apparently also done during the last administration.  What if the CPB officer has a chip on his shoulder like some of the posters here?

Saying "I don't mind because I have nothing to hide" implies a high level of faith in the ethics of those conducting the surveillance, and I'm not convinced that trust is warranted.

If torture was legal, I wouldn't put it past them to allow it.

I, as an individual person, have nothing to hide.  But when I travel overseas for business, my company-issued computer, as well as my company-issued PDA has client data and internal firm data on it, I would really feel squeezed if I were required to give up my passwords.  I am under company mandate to keep this data confidential and safe.

This is the quandary the NASA scientist went through.  We are US citizens, and are entrusted with confidential data by our companies which does not belong to us individually.  I would have to give CPB my passwords, but I would also have to tell my company that data might have been copied and/or compromised.  Then my company would have to tell our clients that their data might have been copied and/or compromised.   It's financial accounting data that could be used for someone's personal gain on the market.

I had to laugh about the cat pictures from another poster...that's what they would find on MY personal pages!!!!

That's kind of what I mean... The fact that they don't do it because it's not legal means that there are some basic human rights that exist at POE, even if other civil rights are not as robust as they might be in other settings.

I do have to say after I read the article, it sounds like it's being used as a tool for intimidation (bullying would be the more judgmental word) as much as to keep the country safer.

Also if you are a visa holder and not a citizen they can deny you entry into the country.

And another article about your data...

People seem to be panicking for no reason....

1. Cell phones and digital data is used in place of paper eg CV;s, emails, photos, etc...whats the big deal?? In the past it was paper. They would look through your bag and find those. Now its cell phones.

2. ALMOST all countries of the world do or can do this. Google Border Security Canada or Australia and you will see videos of Immigration at Airports there doing this all the time. Not sure what is wrong with American media...bunch of winos. Obama's Administration did that all the time.

3. People forget, EVEN you are a US Citizen, you are subject to inspection AT ANY TIME...no one reads those sighs at the Airport/Trains Stations etc...they just mean it now with the problem of security now.

When arriving into the US from a foreign territory.. you are not on US soil until admitted by CBP. Therefore, everyone, incl USCs have to be inspected.

This has already been known for a while now even before Trump took office. But good job trying to fan the flames of misinformation and anxiety.
