Hi,

My husband and I got married in January of this year in Senegal. We had to get married overseas as he has never been able to come to the states. We met in France about 4 years ago  and I traveled there to see him about 13 times since.... then this year be agreed to go back to Senegal so that we could get married and finally get the chance to start our lives together.

My question is should I have filed out marriage certificate somewhere in the US, maybe in my state, NY? As soon as I got back to the states I filed the i-130 petition  but and now i am worried that I missed a step! Was I supposed to file of marriage certificate somewhere in the US?

I was married in Jamaica and I didn't file the certificate anywhere.  I used the certificate to get a new SS card and license with my new name with no problems.

As long as the wedding is legal in his home country, it will be legal in the USA; no need to file for anything in the USA- in fact, you cannot, since you cannot marry the same person twice.

Hi  fellow member.  I am a resident in Florida and my husband lives in Senegal.  we had a court marriage ceremony in February, 2015.  Because Senegal is a French Country our original marriage certificate was in French and all I had to do was have it translated in English and certified. I then filed our I130 petition and we were approved December, 2015.

Thanks for your response! I really hope my husband is here within a year too.  I submitted the petition on 1/25 and still have not even received the a receipt back :( I'm so anxious to at least know they received the petition and check!
