I am interested in seeing this book because patois changes everyday with new words/sayings that people use for a short period of time until something new comes along (i bet you next year you won't be hearing frass, sell off, or tek weh yuhself as much as you do now).

Oh here is the book name. I found it. Understanding Jamaican Patois: An Introduction to Afro-Jamaican Grammar

Those words/phrases mentioned above are "slang words" so yes they will/might not be around next year. Thats like looking at a teenager and saying "that's fresh" they would give you a blank stare. Some of you reading that phrase might be giving me a blank stare too. lol

Bottom line patios is mainly a spoken language and when writing its spelled phonetically - meaning you spell it the way its pronouced. Hence the spelling changes/variations. and the beauty of it all is that it is a dialect of english. and as long as the person slows down so u can pick up the words individually, you should have no problem.

at least patios is a spoken language...I had to learn Latin for 7 years and that language is dead like herring and only written

I said the same thing in PM pretty much. I didn't think I was bashing her or her relationship...but I guess my words were taken out of context. I won't post about relationship issues anymore. Immigration related topics from now on. Maybe, I should go back over to my other thread. No way to get offended talking to myself over there.

No way! That's no fun! We need comic relief FROM the immigration stuff or we would all go crazy

Jomo, you'll be fine. You have nothing to worry about - you're in a real, legitimate relationship. All you have to do is send proof of that. By the end of 2 years you'll have LOTS of proof.

Flying Over Jamaica

Fidel Castro of Cuba, Maurice Bishop of Grenada and Michael Manley of Jamaica were returning from a meeting with Mikael Gorbachev in Moscow in the late 1970s. However, there was a power-cut over the entire Caribbean, so the pilot of the plane could not identify which country they were over so the plane could land.

The three leaders reassured him that they could identify their respective nations, as long as he opened a window.

This the pilot immediately did. After flying for a while, Castro shouted: "Si! This is my beloved Cuba. I smell the sugar!" The pilot then located the landing strip, let off Castro and took off again.

Bishop then erupted: "There she is, my spice island. Smell that nutmeg!"

The pilot landed, let off Bishop and took off again, with only Manley on board. "What about you sir?†he enquired, "How are you going to identify your country?" "Everything is under control" Manley replied. He then stuck his hand with a $50,000 gold watch outside the window.

When he took it back in, the watch was gone. "We're over Jamaica!" he announced.

And whether or not our husbands are here or not means absolutely nothing to the matter in which we handle our relationships.

:whistle:You are in for so many surprises when the time comes. You have no idea......

oh heck! I am a grown woman who HAS been is many other long-term relationships that were with Jamaican men who lived with me for years!!! So no, I will not be in for a huge surprise. By the time that my husband moves here it will be at least 2 years into our relationship....not 6months. We have a base structure that is our Lord Jesus Christ so even though he and I are not seeing each other face to face, God keeps us seeing eye to eye. I think the problem is that if you are a selfish or self centered person you have "no idea" what marriage will require of you. That is not me or my husbands issue. So once again the "generalization" that MY relationship may be as difficult as yours doesnt stand tall.

Have you not learned anything from all these posts about NOT generalizing others relationships to your own? Cha!!!

I didn't say anything about difficult relationships! Just about surprises. Not necessarily negative - some of our experiences were downright funny!

I know that you all had all day to talk about this but I have yet to say my piece:

#1. When I commented on JG statement about patois, I was insinuating that I was too far behind to try and catch up with the reading. I actually printed out the story at work but haven't had the time to read it. For me patois isn't something that I can't keep up with because thats all I have been hearing and speaking my entire life.

#2. I cannot believe that you are upset because some people decided that didn't want to follow up with your story. Are you kidding me? I am also a strong BLACK women who is well educated and choose to address all issues. Jawi, from the looks of things, you are very talented but I cannot believe that you started all of this animosity and bullshi# because some people aren't interested in reading your story. In this thread we have choices and options and no one has the right in this forum to take that away from anyone.

#3 Quite honestly JG you are better than me because no one is going to tell me how I should talk or speak about my man. Better yet how I should run my household. You got some nerve to step out of line and question someone about how they run their household. If she wants to bash her man MON-SUN than so be it. Thats HER JA man, HER house, and THEIR life. If she decided that she wanted to share HER stories on this website than that is HER choice and HER business. (please go back and read the things that you said about JG and her husband---- to me thats way out of line)

JG you might not agree but that is the way I see it.

I have listened to some stories in this thread about their relationships and sometimes I want to comment but guess what, its not my relationship or my problems. All I can do is offer support or suggestions when ASKED of me to do so.

After this posting I know that there will be many replies but I gotta keep it real.

Does negativity always have to keep the thread going? It was slow for awhile and I guess this how people wanted to pick things up!

Yes, everything is written in plain english so that no one can misconstrude any comments or remarks.

As far as about me, you can say what you like. I've always felt like what you said; but just didn't really state it that way. And, even if I didn't agree with you, I do believe you have the right to say what you like. So, it's all good.

Most of the issues people have with me are merely misunderstandings. Some I will correct and some I will not bother with.

As far as Jawi goes, we've talked and we have more understanding of each other, I think. We are cool.

Negativity can be productive sometimes. I just don't think people need to tear each other apart all the time. Sometimes when someone is negative about their own relationship, they may just be trying to work things out the best they can. Not everything is sunshine and rainbows, whether we like it or not.

So mr jengles told me that he didn't have to take a road test to get his license in JA. I was in disbelief (even though it would explain so much) . He said all he had to do was take a reading and vision test. So they want JA drivers to be able to read where they going and see where they going...but could care less if their able to stay on the road. He said most people get a "few lessons" AFTER they get their license if they know someone with a car...

All some of Andre's friends did was pay someone off for their JA license. That is scary to me.

He's immature, plain and simple..... he'll grow up someday, but "I" won't be around to see that happen. I said that "I" am training him to be a better person for the next one !!

Hey, Kelly

Sorry you are still going through this, I've been there done that. I was told the same thing, with my x-husband, I went and got a restraining order  what good did that do  I packed my bags and got the hell out of dodge, yes it was my home, one I worked hard to get, remodeled the entire home with my hard earned money. We had two cars a nice home, all paid for by yours truely. But guess what? I didn't care anymore, my happiness meant soo much more. I left it all and had to start over from scratch. No one should have to through what you are going through. I seh leave his a$$ sitting der and move on. I know it's easier said than done, esp with all this immigration suff, but something has to give, I'm all for working thing out but then again life is too short.

One point I think we all may be forgetting is that however this plays out, if they split up she is financially responsible for him....remember the forms we have to sign? Some of you may not be there yet; but is is a reality you will all face. We legally agree to suport our SO for 40 working quarters.........that is 10 YEARS.

All I am saying here is she has much to figure out if she decides to leave or kick him out. It's not as easy as I am envisioning it, I know that.

Scam- Delta Airlines

I agree with Gill. We should contact the FCC. I am on the phone with Delta's Corporate Office (404) 715-2600. J. Masters, Customer Care Rep. has filed a report. Delta is aware of the fraudulent calls that are being made to Sky Miles Members. The representative is trying to find the common link. Are we staying at the same hotel? Do we rent from the same car agencies? I told her that I would contact other VJ members to inquire.

There is a great green book that teaches you PATIOS. It is a lot better than that little booklet. I have it I just can't remember the name of it. I got it on Amazon. I will have to look if I have it or my father might still have it. I swear its the best book around.
