LETTER OF THE DAY - Gunmen poised to kill more children

published: Thursday | October 11, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The headlines in The Gleaner of Wednesday, October 10, simply said, 'Fire for bullets, Gunmen hunt children with firebombs'. The story by Glenroy Sinclair on page A3 read 'Gunmen are anxious to kill another child, in reprisal for one of two children who were killed during last Friday's massacre'. He says, "After the gunmen gassed and lit the house with six children inside, the group of heavily armed gunmen hid in the dark backyard and called out the names of the children one by one, hoping they would step outside, so they could kill them."

I am deeply disturbed, saddened and distraught by what has happened in the past few days. This incident on October 9 is even more disturbing than the one last week. What have these children ever done to deserve to be hunted down and slaughtered like rabid animals, by the human beings who are to protect them? What did those children do on Friday to deserve to be slaughtered?

I am begging those persons who believe that our children have so wronged them, not to do this. We are murdering our future, we are murdering the men and women who will be called upon to govern and provide a country so those of us who are fortunate to live until then, will have a future.

I am burdened with guilt. Guilt for not speaking out, guilt for not doing more for our children. Guilt for not helping to protect our children's rights, and ensuring that others do the same.

We cannot allow these children to become the victims of someone's dream and desire to see them dead. Nothing must be spared to halt the murdering of our children. Certainly not these children the reporter spoke of. What have we become but mercenaries when we hunt and murder our children like game animal.

Dyam disgusting! It really makes me wonder where my homeland is headed! What gets inside someones head to make them think it's ok to hurt and KILL children? Innocent children??

Baby Cham's song 'Possess' raises the same questions. Where the hell is JA headed with this type of madness? More and more headlines like the one above is becoming the norm, and that's the scary part!

Well, things like this happen everywhere in the world probably every day. And, while I will never be desensitized to it, it doesn't usually hurt so deep. For some reason today.....maybe it is just the way the letter is worded, I don't know......It just stung me. I cried when I read this. It may be one of the most horrifying things I have read.

I agree JG, unfortunately things like this do happen everywhere (look at Cleveland). I remember spending almost every summer of my youth in JA., because my parents thought I would be safer there, than hanging out on Long Island. Almost like a child haven. What happened to THAT Jamaica. Where if something happened to you Ms. So and So from down the road was right there if help you. It really was VILLAGES raising children back then. I grieve for the loss of those days and times and cry because my boys will probably never be able to experience THAT Jamaica!

It's also heart-breaking to know that someone woke up and plotted how, when and where to MURDER these poor children and convinced others to assist him in this madness! MORE THAN MAKE ME MAD, IT WORRIES ME TO MY CORE!!! It's like nobody in Jamaica rates God anymore! They don't fear ANYTHING OR ANYONE...not even their creator!

JG, I feel your tears. I cry for the children and Jamaica's future!

Oh, Gill.....I feel for you too. I know some other Jamaicans who remember those times and when they relate, I can picture the beauty of those times in my head. Now, not only from what I read, but from what I have seen first hand, I agree with you, those times are long gone. I sure wish I could've seen it then. My own kids love Jamaica. I wish they had known it then too.

I worry every day for the lives of my nieces and nephews, BIL & SIL's.

What could possibly possess anyone to think these children were any kind of threat to them? And then, yah, like you said, to convince others of the same?

Wow! Amazing documentary. So much of it gave me the chills. The gunfire as he looked at the guns in part one set the stage for the whole thing for me.

I wonder...in part 4 where the don said he would live the life till he died. How many of them end up disabled in wheelchairs or stuck on some kind of machine. How many of them don't die. And, what happens to them then? Not much use to the gangs anymore. Wonder if they still stick by them.

Senseless violence. Even those fighting don't know what they are fighting about anymore or even who is the enemy.

1 person dies every 6 hours cause of this? I am truly saddened.

That was crazy...also in Cape Town..OK, so you're both PNP...WTH are you fighting for? I think the Don kindda hit the nail on the head when he said the thing about people making movies...it's true those kids don't have anywhere else to shine except in who is a bigger and better 'shotta'! Then what Donovan said about how the gang violence has changed and that this 'arson business' of killing people was just pure evil. Like I said it's like every generation of 'Gangstas' has to take it up a notch...what will it be like in 10, 20,30 years?

I thought that Ross guy was VERY brave (maybe almost stupid)...even with the police wearing all kindda vest he's just walking around the garrison like nothing! The piece about the girl who was 4 months pregnant being killed got to him and me too! Bwoy, very sad!

Glad you watched it though (L) -Gill

I was thinking that too....when he was walking behind them on that bust in the first segment.....OMFG!!!!!!

Not only the movies, Gill. It's true but it's also a cop out. I really believe people need to take responsibility for their own thoughts and actions. Anyhow, did you catch where the one guy said.....the kids come home hungry and know they will not eat, while their neighbor has a nicer house, nice car, nice clothes, etc. and a GUN!

They don't even know what they are fighting for anymore. Because they have nothing else to do. How many young guys were home and/or around the neighborhood during the day when they need to be at jobs.

I know Jawi...it's a sobering subject!

I also found this 4 part series from UK's SkyOne new's...it's a documentary on the Gang violence in JA. When you get a chance check it out...like I said...What is happening to Jamaica and what will it be like in 20, 30, 40 years if this continues??

Here's the Youtube link...

Just copy and paste to your internet browser if you can't click on the link.

I can't even say enjoy, because there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ENJOYABLE about it!

Yeah JG., that's so true...nuf men were around the place in the middle of the day! In a way, I was a little relieved when they said it wasn't political wars anymore...because people killing off dem one another for PNP or JLP that don't give a damn bout dem REALLY boils my blood. Seriously, I hate to say this and I am sure many of my Jamaican Sistren and Brethren will disagree...but in my humble opinion Jamaica was better under the damn British!

It kills me when I think is this what we fought so hard to achieve our independence for? One corrupt government official after another...it's all about GREED!!! And F-deh poor people dem!

Jamaica is in BAD shape right now and I honestly don't know what the hell the solution is.

Good Morning Fam,

Just a little morning chuckle.

Enjoy- (L) -Gill

PS- Sorry for the patois...let me know if you don't understand

***************************************************************

Tree likkle bears??.... (Jamaican version) :

Baby Bear goes downstairs and sits in his small chair at the

table, he looks into his small bowl. It is empty. "Mama, s'maddy

nyam me porridge!!" he squeaks.

Papa Bear arrives at the big table and sits in his big chair.

He looks into his bowl, and it is also empty.

"A who eat mi porridge?!!" he roars.

Momma Bear puts her head through the serving hatch from the

kitchen and yells at the top of her voice "Ah me get up

first and wake up everybody

else ina de house. A me mek de tea. A me wash up di dish dem and

put weh everyting. A me go out inna de cold morning air an fetch

de newspaper.

A me set de table. An a me put out de puss, clean de litter box an

full de water and food dish.

An now unuh decide fe drag oono sorry bear-### downstairs and

grace mi kitchen wid unuh grumpy self! Well mek mi tell oonu dis

once an far all..........

MI NUH MEK DE RASS PARRIDGE YET!!"

LOL LOL Mi try fe guess de punchline...but mi neva tink of dis wan. LMAO....good chuckle

oK, SO..CAN i TELL u all that I walked in my room yesterday and my daughter had babay powder all over the place..I wanted to scream !!:angry: I left it for her father to clean cause i know i woulda gi her some lick if mi did affi clean it up...

*Jawi trying hard fe stifle wan dutty buss hout and laff*

*kin teet*

Ummm...and how did she get to the powder K? What did Daddy K say? *snicker...giggle* that reminds me of the time my oldest son got to my new lingerie (nightie and matching robe)...the robe had feathers around the sleeves...very cute. Welll anyway...I come into my room and I see pink feathers or remnants of feathers floating around my room. My lingerie was not in the bag on the bed. So, I go to my closet to look for it....when I get there...my son (then 3) was sitting on the floor with his little safety scissors...I asked him did you cut up mommie's feathers....and he said no mommy. Meanwhile there were feathers all over him...all over his little head and face and hands. My robe was sitting mangled in a pile next to him...with the price tags still attached.

waaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeee BOAL....LMAO...sorry Kimmy! I can't help it! LOL LMAO at the image of white powder all over everything.

U no good..chile mi couldn't do nuttin. She did have a small bottle a powder in her book bag I guess from my moms house .. and she discover it sah..and there it went..daddy did nuttin but clean it up and a ask"how u so rude man" ..cho

laughing even harder now....waaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeee

when my daughter was in pre-school they did this project where they filled a sock with rice......as much rice as the child weighed at birth. Molly was 9lbs. 15 oz. So that much rice in this sock puppet looking thing. One day, my kids got into a fight and started swinging that sock around. Can you guess what happened? Uh....huh......it broke in one mid-swing. Rice swung all over the freakin' room. We moved 2 years later and I was still sweeping up the rice!!!!!

AWWWWWWWWWW...they would have been getting every little grain until they reach puberty. LOL kids. Gotta love em.

Some people in Jamaica love their life and would never want to leave and they only reason they would leave would to be with their spouse. If their spouse left them some would go back to Jamaica.

Yes, I agree with this  Even though in my opinion, life is better here, Tony was happy in JA and originally never wanted to move here. (Especially when I told him how cold it is in the winter!) He would definately go back if we split up - we've talked about it before. That's where his family is. Even though he has some friends here now, it's just not the same. He LOVED his job that he had when I met him and he liked having family and cousins and friends around all the time. Also, just the whole laid-back atmosphere.

Although it's funny, the last couple times we were down there, he was getting impatient with how slooooow everything is done  And how bad the roads are compared to here!!

Well instead of it being in the 80's it hit 51 degrees here in Chi Land and hubby was already looking for gloves at Walmart. Needless to say he doesn't want to take out the trash tonight. He said we were all wimpy wearing sweaters and coats earlier this fall season but I guess he is singing a new tune today. I wish I could of seen him walk out the front door today for school.

Rhonda my husband is the same way loved his job and friends. He gave up his reggae musician life for me. At least one night this summer he got to jam with his friends who play for Stephen Marley.

Andre told me last year he could never wear a long sleeved shirt. He ended up looking like the Michalin Man last year during winter.

Last night, I got home from work to find him in corduroys, a sweatshirt, a tam, and boots. I was like, for God's sake, Andre, it's 62 degrees. It's going to get a lot colder.

BOAL...waaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeee...still laughing. I keep seeing him looking all innocent like he does in the picture you have posted...like a little boy bundled up for 8 inches of fresh snow. LORD. You guys really make my day.:lol::lol::yes:

I remember when my ex first got here in December. He didn't want to wear the leather coat I bought him and said that he was good walking out of the airport to the car. Ok...no problem. He asked me why the sun shines outside if it's cold. Well, I went to work, and I get a call from him...teeth chattering and breathing labored. He decided I didn't know what I was talking about when I told him it was 28 degrees outside. He woke up looked out the window at the beatiful sun rays...and decided to take a morning jog...in shorts and a marina. By the time he realized that no matter how close the sun looked...no matter how fast he ran...he couldn't warm up. No to mention that people in cars and the neighbors were staring at him like he had lost his mind. He said it was the hardest run in the world to get back to the house because he was frozen solid. We still laugh about it to this day.

If this comes through, it shows him freezing his butt off on Lake Michigan last year. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f377/jom...224061_0009.jpg
