Have any of your SO's here in the US had to work with any homosexuals? If so, how did they cope with it?

I ask because Andre works with a new guy who is flamingly gay. Andre's having some issues with it. I keep reminding him that he's management now and has to be accepting.

Anyone else deal with anything like this?

There is genuine hatred for homosexuality in Jamaica, I've heard people said that they would not speak to their own children if they turn out to be homosexuals, and there is a feeling that tolerance means that you condone the lifestyle and that you might be one too (as silly as that sound it's true).

There is not much voilence directed at homosexuals but there is much resentment. I experienced working with homosexuals IN JAMAICA. I kinda shocked at the openess when I came here first, even though I was never bothered by it, I just found it bit funny.

My second job was in the gap store when I came here and one of my best friends there was openly gay, I became even more tolerant towards the lifestyle when I worked as a personal trainer in a west village gym, I trained many gays people, made many friends there, I got used to seeing homosexual couples on a daily basis hugging and smooching, half the staff was gay, I'm pretty cool with the lifestyle, don't matter to me at all.

He has to stop looking the man a gay and just try to see him as a co-worker.

Good morning.

Damien had a terrible time with gay men but he's getting better. He's into bodybuilding and just accepted that most men in the gym are gay. He'll speak to them but I feel for the day one of them ask Damien to spot them

Ok Marlita if for some small chance plan A dont work for me well let me stop thinkin like dat! but if it do plan B is... i give myself 6 mos and im in JA too i would get married come home work 6 mos and bounce .... lol i cannot see me stayin here!!! without him sorry cash in 401k and im out...please lord what kind a job would i have and wait....how long does it take to get a jamaica visa or work permit next thought we would have to do that ok wait theres plan C....get married move to florida go back and forth! oh boy why cant we find love in the US!!! :) i go on vacation and never in a million years thought id find me here but here i am :)

LOL! Girl you crazy! But thats just my thinking too. Come Christmas I am either out of here or losing my mind. I'd rather be out of here. Once you are married in Jamaica its not hard to get a work permit, u just have to establish residency first or register a business in your name. Each one takes all of 1 DAY to accomplish! So I say just start looking at it as an option. At least try it for 6mons-1year! I mean why not?! Its way to crowded here in the US. I mean look at VJ! I just say make sure you leave the US with a plan on how to get back in the work game. Also go to JA with a work plan already in the mix. I am getting all that in order now. I think God is blessing me on this one cause its way easier than I ever imagined. I pray bout it all the time thouhg and so does my husband. So we figure which ever doors begin to open its all coming from God and we just follow. We both know its gonna be a harder life in JA, but if thats where God wants us we have to go there. He hasnt steered us wrong yet.

Not sure if anyone is interested but usually the Embassy hires what's called an OR (ordinary resident) = an American citizen who lives overseas. Not sure what the pay scale is but I can look into it if anyone is interested.

Hello my lovely Yardie family! Hugs and love to you all (L)

Well I have been trying to keep up/catch up on the reading but I give up

Congrats to everyone who has made steps forward in getting your visas and to those that got their visa and their SO here already!

Congrats to Jax and Shauna on the future bundles of joy...I am sure you will be great moms (F)

Well things here are going good. I started taking another class to try and keep my foot in the door at college. It sure is hard to juggle it all - work and school and home life. A and I are still working on things and making progress. It is definitely encouraging to be making progress towards the better. We celebrated our 2 year anniversary last Thursday and it was great! Who would have ever guessed that 2 years has already flown by?!? I can still remember agonizing over those blasted forms and dialing a hundred numbers just to get to talk to A for a few minutes (yeah right like it ever only lasted a few minutes  ) Glad that it is fall...I love fall and all the events and the weather and leaves changing. It is just a great overall feeling. Well anyways nothing else is new around here...living life and trying to survive. Hope y'all are doing well!

Much Love,

Jamie :star:

Hey Jamie - good to see you. Happy Belated Anniversary (F)

I found a Jamaican restuarant that makes the best cornmeal porridge. My friends drive 30 miles every Sunday morning to eat there. Damien won't make it home and I had no idea how to make it. Thanks for the receipe...I'll try it next week.

Hi Guys,

My side hustle is working from home for 1800-Flowers...wanted to let anyone interested know they are hiring now, in preparation for the holidays... in case anyone is interested. However, you must live in the states listed below in order to work for them. It's not a bad deal...considering I go to work in my P.J.'s and you make your own schedule. Just FYI, in case you or somebody you know needs a little extra $$ and has kids or responsibilties that keeps them at home. It's really pretty easy work.

I know Chica. :( That's the worst part! I wish they would expand it to include more states. But it's based off where they currently have call centers.

I have done some major flight searching and I found the cheapest dates are either 12/24/07 or 1/7/08

you might wanna check it to see if they are good in your area :)

I do have to say that all you "Black Friday" shoppers SUCK!!!!! I work at Old Navy and I Hate the friday after Thanksgiving with a passion. While you probably see bargains and fun, I see running around like a chicken with my head cut off, everyone crabby, and rude customers making my life a nightmare. The most exhausting day of the year. Glad it will be my last.

My husband picks up his own health insurance TODAY!!! Woo hoo. I'm looking at December 23rd being the last day I work two jobs. Looking forward to some weekends again.

While you are out doing your after Thanksgiving shopping, make sure you are extra nice to the people in the stores. They are probably having a rough day. Good luck on some good bargains!!!!

I have to say that I am one of those crazies!! Love Black Friday...last year I missed it cause I was in JA. ...I was screwed up for the whole holiday season! The best part for me is by 9am on Black Friday morning I am DONE with all of my Christmas shopping! I am a horrible procrastinated, so it works for me. Last year, I was running around on Christmas Eve, convincing myself that oven mitts were the BEST present for my Aunts (cause that's all they had left in the store  ) Never Again! Usually, I am one of those crazies that wakes-up at 1am to be on line by 2am anxiously awaiting Black Friday shopping to commence  !

Gill

We had $49 cashmere sweaters last year on Black Friday. Talk about crazies....they were literally tugging them between two people, pushing and shoving. It was crazy.

From working in retail, I usually just shop the internet and go into stores mostly for gift cards. Not a big fan of stores much anymore.

I will probably make you sick saying this.....since you are so last minute.....I am making all my Christmas presents this year. Over the years, I have dabbled in making some presents. This year, I am making nearly ALL of them. I've been working on them for months now. I will only need to shop for my husband, my kids, and a few misc. gift cards and I'll be well done with all that before Thanksgiving and probably do most of it by the internet and have them bring it all to me. I love my UPS man!!!!!!

I may be pretty broke this christmas so everyone just may get a homemade cake and cookies ! and a card or one gift for the house

Chica,

Ain't nothing wrong with that!! We sometimes forget the true meaning of Christmas with all of the commercialism these days! I might be right there with you pon deh broke side, if Ken gets an interview date between Christmas and New Year's ...the prices of the flights from 12/26-12/2/08, at this point is $1200!!!! :o

JG - I have been talking to hubby about the culture shock he will experience, especially as it applies to the gay lifestyle. Honestly, though I do not agree with the lifestyle, I have no problem with them. I have had friends who wish they never had to deal with them at all, including some in the medical field. Aaron doesn't condone the lifestyle, but because of his temperament, I know he will treat them with respect and dignity.

If Andre is okay with other gays that he met, maybe there is something more about this guy that bothers him.

Oh, there definately is. For one thing, Andre says he can't tell if it is a he or a she most of the time. And, he is a little more open about it then some of the other folks we know.

I guess I maybe posted this subject as a kind of warning to everyone still on their way up. The situation will most likely present itself and it's something to think about before it happens. I knew the JA opinion on the subject. I warned Andre and talked it up. And, like the person said before, some of these people are very good friends of mine and even a relative. I had to tell Andre that no matter what his opinion, he had to be tolerant and nice. I did not want anyone hurt in any way.

Andre is really nice and "adjustable" as he puts it. He's done really well. But, that being said, it is still an issue from time to time.

Anyway...the above receipe is dead on for cornmeal porridge! Just don't forget to keep stirring... or it will get clumpy and lumpy! Keep the fire low after you put the cornmeal in...Viola!! Yummy Yummy...I used to make it for my sons when they were babies, usually at the 10-11pm feeding...when they turned 7-8 months...I used their formula instead of milk!

Trust me Rhonda, it's something to keep in mind...cause it holds them! My sons slept through the night after they had their cornmeal bottle! And Mommy could finally get a full nights sleep!

I better start practicing now  I'm not much of a cook! You said you put it in their bottle? Is it that thin that it would flow through or did you make it thinner for them? I've never eaten it so I have no idea what to expect. I might surprise Tony and make some before he gets home from work one day!

When I put it in my son's bottle, I had to cut the opening a little bigger so it would flow through. Because of that, you have to make sure they don't choke.

I will probably make you sick saying this.....since you are so last minute.....I am making all my Christmas presents this year.

:hehe: Yeah, I'm sick now! I'll just call you Martha! What kinds of things do you make? I woulnd't have the slightest clue how to make gifts.

Last year, Andre & I made candles and these really cute foam and CD things that you hang outside. That was mostly cause he couldn't work yet and we were trying to keep him busy.

This year, I am making indiviualize note cards. I am a scrapper and a card maker, so it's a natural thing. I printed everyone's name on card stock. Then, I am decorating each card front with ink, paper, stamps, buttons, flowers, brads, etc. I also stamped their initial and a flower on matching envelopes. The plan is to make 20 cards & envelopes for each person. I'm wrapping them up in a ribbon. Some people are also getting a decorated card box containing 20-25 different greeting cards. It sounded like a really good idea until I am deep into the first sets. I'm about 3/4 done with the first batch......12 different people. Right now, it's like uuuuuggggghhhhh.....when am I going to finish these.

Last year, Andre wanted only clothes and shoes. For his birthday he wanted a watch. This year for Christmas he wants a chain with some bling on it and one other thing that I can't quite remember right now.

That sounds a lot like Tony! Only he wanted so MUCH bling that I split it into 2 gifts! I got him the chain for x-mas and a pendant for the chain for his birthday. He bought his own watch a while back, but I think he wants a new one soon. Knowing him, it will be something really expensive

Question- My hubby is missing cornmeal porridge. Does anyone know how to make it or have a reciepe? Thanks

How come he doesn't know how to make this? Andre makes it for me all the time.

Tony hasn't made it in YEARS. He says he doesn't really remember how to make it either - that's probably why he keeps postponing it

Andre wanted a Movado watch. I balked at the price......actually I think I said are you Freakin' (not exactly the word I used) crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!! After I explained he could get a really nice watch at a jewelry store and he found some he liked, he was good. The one he ended up getting only cost $105. I was pleased.

The bling and chain he is looking at is around the $120 range. I'm good with that.
