My ex would only speak in proper English when I first met him and he was still in Jamaica, no matter how much I begged him not to. I wanted to learn patwah in the worst way, and I wanted him to teach me. Well poop on me because as soon as he touched US soil nothing but pure patois in the last 5 years. He said that he didn't want to loose it and start twanging. My sister to this day cannot figure out what he is saying to her. Him and my brother would sit and talk for hours on end...just for my brother to whisper in my ear later that he didn't have a clue what he was saying yeah too. LOL

I will only speak proper English when I am around those I know won't understand. Many push and prod, but to me it makes no sense to do it for their entertainment. Now around Jamaicans and other Caribbean nationals, I let it fly....But if they tick me off, they'll get all the entertainment they can stand

It was not entertainment for me...I just really wanted to learn and understand. I feel so at home in Jamaica...but I was clueless because I couldn't understand it at all. Then, one day I was walking through Ochi, and it was like my ears popped. I was turning in all directions...hearing and understanding all conversations. I know people wondered why the strange tourist girl was staring and smiling and nodding like a new born fool. I understand it pretty well now...but I am not brave enough to actually test my own ability to speak it (unless of course I get upset...then it will come tumbling out in bits of regular English...Ebonics and patois) LOL kikikikiki

I've never wanted a Jamaican to entertain me...and I don't buy into the whole it's so sexy (unless of course it is Beenie Man, Capleton or Vybz Kartel). Vybz could lyrics me anytime anytime...with his lizard looking self. Love him the same way still. :D

The funniest thing is, I can't speak to someone who I know won't understand it in the dialect unless I'm cussin them out. It just won't come out, just feels so forced. I don't know why

I'm the same way. When I was younger it was more fluent but now it comes and go depending on who I'm talking to. Many of Javon friends think I was born down there so they always tell me that can't understand the twang. They need me to talk right....I say I am and them just laugh. Then of course it all comes out.

Thanks everyone for the congrats....The real issue is that I have to find a place for us to live and I am stuck. I would like to buy a house but I don't want to rush into purchasing a house. I really don't want to get an apt because that is just like throwing money away. Of course Melvin is putting pressure on me to come up but I keep telling him that I'm working on it. He is thinking that I could get an apt and then we both work on finding a house when he comes up. Realisticly, I know that it will take awhile for us to get settled and for him to start working. I don't know. Last night I cried on the phone with him. I am so stressed out because none of my family likes the idea of him coming up and me moving with him but no one wants to say it. All I keep getting is little comments like "are you sure you are ready to move in with someone because you know people change blah blah blah. I think I would feel so much better if they weren't sending me hidden messages and would just come straight with the real. Again they don't know that he will be here on a K-1 visa. So, I don't know----just confused because I love my fiance and at this point he comes first. I did tell him that he will have to wait awhile to come up because of the living situation but of course he wants to spend christmas with me and the new years which I don't blame him for. I want to spend it with him as well and hopefully he will be here by then.

If you don't mind me asking where do you live now? Can he join you there?

I'm the same way. When I was younger it was more fluent but now it comes and go depending on who I'm talking to. Many of Javon friends think I was born down there so they always tell me that can't understand the twang. They need me to talk right....I say I am and them just laugh. Then of course it all comes out.

I think what turns me off is, when people pick up that I am not from the States and I tell them I'm Jamaican, the response is "But you don't sound Jamaican". I'm like, what does a Jamaican sound like, since our motto is "Out of Many, One People", we don't all sound alike.

Well color me pink! You're Jamaican?!!! Wow! You people sure know how to party huh? I love how you talk. Talk Jamaican for me and my friends. Awww..now...just a little?! No?? Not today? Okay then. Irie! Yeah Mon! Respect! Natural Mystic! I love Bob Marley! wwoooooooo-hoooooooo!!!!
