Can I ask you guys a question?

I intend to have Ken come through JFK (since we live in NY). I read that he can recieve authorization to work via a stamp in his passport upon arrival! Can anyone tell me how this works? Is he able to work immediately (like if he arrives on Monday, can he hit the streets on Tuesday  ) or do we need to file something else in order for him to work? Would he take the passport to potential employers or does he need to wait for a social security card.

Also does he have to specifically ASK for this stamp or will Immigration give it to him b/c of his visa type?

Thanks,

Gill

Hey R.,

I found this info for you: (http://www.constitution-and-rights.com/dual-citizenship.html)

Dual Citizenship

Memorandum of Law

SUMMARY

Jamaica recognizes Dual Citizenship. Only the Governor General of Jamaica can deprive a Jamaican of his/her Jamaican citizenship.

The mere act of renunciation of Jamaican nationality in the naturalization process to become a U.S. Citizen does not deprive the Jamaican of his/her Jamaican citizenship.

It is not contrary to U.S. Law to have both a Jamaican Passport and a U.S. Passport.

Thanks

Mi know...mi ah go stop fret. No name for the storm yet and it is almost stationary. Right now it is up in the air where it will go, but it is projected to be a hurricane by early next week :(

Girl, you need to stop worrying! I looked at the satellite of that storm - it's way out in the Atlantic!! It's not even IN the Caribbean yet! You don't need to worry.

I can remember being in Customs in Raleigh, N.C. and seeing an officer with a dog walking around. My heart started pounding as I wondered if he would smell anything on my luggage as it was in a room at Andre's house that was heavy with fumes most the time. Never even thought, what if someone planted something in my luggage as a joke?

I always freak out when the dogs come around! One time I was actually on my way to the airport to go home when I remembered I had a little "something" in my carry-on bag!!! :o I had totally forgotten I put it there. I almost had a heart attack just thinking about what could have happened if I hadn't thought of it in time! Oh boy.

Gill, mi ah pray and look forward to mi trip next week, mi caan wait. Mi ah tek mi min offa Hingrid, ole skettel fi true. Mi dis a look forward to di likkle trip home.

-Tam (L)

I can understand. I have now had TWO trips to JA messed up due to hurricanes  First Hurricane Ivan when I was supposed to be down there for my birthday AND to go to the interview with Tony. The Embassy was closed INDEFINATELY due to the hurricane and power outages. I was so upset and mad. Then, I just got delayed because of Hurricane Dean last month :ranting: I ended up only getting to spend 4 nights in JA instead of the 7 I was supposed to. I HATE hurricanes!!!

Plus, I intend to become an official JA. citizen after reading the prior post about dual citizenship!!

How about you guys? Jamaican Citizenship anyone?

Yes, I would like to do it. As long as it doesn't affect my U.S. citizenship in any way I'm all for it.

I saw someone recently ask if they could request expedited service from the Jamaican embassy and get their visa the same day. They didn't like my answer. And, all the while I was laughing at the request.

I hope it comes soon for you.

That was so unnecessary. I thought we were on here to help each other, not ridicule.

Actually the Embassy could make a LOT of money if they offered this service  I would pay $100 to get it that same day. When Tony had his interview (almost 3 yrs ago now) there was no Airpak to deliver it. We had to drive all the way back to Kingston again to get it. I would definately pay more money just for the conveniance.

:ot: Ok, I'm just wondering, is there a specific way to spell out words in Patois? Or do you just try to spell them how they sound? Do you learn Patois in school or just English? I can read and understand (almost) everything you write just by sounding it out. But if me try to write it meself, it would be a disaster

Oh, and why do you call it "rooks"? I don't get it  I keep forgetting to ask Tony bout it.

2nd request (in another thread too)....but, I am practically begging now....

I have a request guys..........Could you not write so much in Patios? I'm having a tough time figuring out what you are trying to say.

I'm pretty fluent in speaking; just not writing.

Please........Please.....Please.....I don't want to miss something really funny, you know?

 I can understand most of it. I just have to read it a lot more slowly than I would if it was straight English :P

Ditto, as a yawd person I speak fluent patois , but it should be written in moderation, a little sprinkling here and there. When it gets too elaborate I totally skip it in a hurry, it gives me a headache trying to read it.

You know what's funny? I can actually understand it better written than I can when it's spoken. Most of them speak it sooooo fast I can't keep up  I always have to ask Tony to slow down - or I miss half the conversation!

I kinda like the challenge. I don't get to hear it as much. My fiance only speaks proper English when speaking to me...unless he is telling a story. So I get a kick out of at least trying to read it.

Ditto! I'm always asking Tony to speak it more to me, but he doesn't. Only when he talks to his family and friends. He now has 2 JA friends up here, so I get to hear it more now at least!

I was turning in all directions...hearing and understanding all conversations. I know people wondered why the strange tourist girl was staring and smiling and nodding like a new born fool. I understand it pretty well now...but I am not brave enough to actually test my own ability to speak it (unless of course I get upset...then it will come tumbling out in bits of regular English...Ebonics and patois) LOL kikikikiki

 Tony was talking with some guys in JA and I was standing with them. They guys were chatting only in Patois and started talking about women and sex and stuff. They told a funny story about it and I started laughing and they turned to look at me in surprise. Tony says "you know she understands Patois?". They looked all embarrassed because I understood what they said!!

How did I do? Not sure what rahtid means, but assuming it's a form of cuss word! Unless you mean rotten? Hey, maybe I can work for JA Embassy as a Patois translator!!! Seriously, except for one or two words, I understand everything you guys write in Patois.
