Does anyone have to deal with a competitive environment at work? If so, how do you deal with it without being unethical? Just a question to through out there.

I think you are going to have to elaborate just a bit on this one, KK, for me to form an answer.

LOL. I guess I'll describe my situation. I'm working with a team where I'm new fairly too. Well, I had to listen for an hour about a former team member that wanted to be the "STAR." And how she would try to give her suggestions all the time. Well, I'm seeing it from another light. It doesn't seem like the old team member was the only fault. I've had conversations with the team on what should be done and was shut down. One team member call manager and manager says same thing I said. Then she just disregarded that I said anything. I'm very technical and can quote standards (Policies and Procedures) and not to say I know everything..but I have something to offer. If I don't know something, I'm going to research the heck out of it. So far several ocassions has past where I put my two cents in and got robbed. LOL. Now, I'm really in the mood to just speak my mind and not in a polite way.

How new are you to the team? To the company? Maybe you just have to wait out that period of time where you all get to know each other better and learn to appreciate what everyone has to offer.

I love when someone comes in, knowing important things already; but not running all over everyone. I always step back and see how they interact before I accept them fully. I've had so many new people come in and take over, only to crash and burn later, leaving me to pick up the pieces. Thus, the reason I am cautious. Could it be something like that?

Umm...I guess. But when she is quoting the wrong references...It gets kind of funny. I'm laughing inside right now.:no:

One....Cause she is "teaching" the group ,using white board and all, on how to do some work. But she is referenceing the wrong references...and the fact that that reference has been superceded by new ones. She should know this.

Two....She calls the manager for everything. Where I came from you made decisions and presented it to the managers. It just make her look weak.

Third....I'm new but we are both "supervisors", why is she reviewing my work. Keep in mind One and Two above. I was told by the manager that he would review. I don't trust her review comments. She don't even know what the correct standard we are following.

That's a little more touchy, KK. Even though I would feel like saying, hey you fool.........you have to be more tactful. You might have to just pull her aside and tell her you thought it was this instead of this or something like that.

Part of your scenario sounds to me like you will just have to wait out the newness. Part of it makes me wonder if she isn't an idiot. Just bide you time, girl. If she is a clown, your time will come to show her up in a very tactful, yet important way, where everyone will notice.

:innocent: I invited her to a meeting with the client that I'm running. And, I will politely reference the right standards. :innocent:

There you go. Sometimes I hate when I have to "play nice" even though I know I'm right.

I went to school in Jamaica.

When I went back to England, I was shocked and amazed at how backward a lot of the people were who went to school in England.

From my own personal experience, I would say my education in Jamaica was FAR better than a lot of people in England received.

Like I said, IF you can even afford to go to school - many children in JA can not. As far as skill level, maybe that depends on what school you go to. Just like in the U.S. some school districts are better than others.

Here's my beef with the JA school system today....

My one nephew was in 4th grade during the 2005-06 school year. They held him back in 4th for the 2006-07 school year. This past Monday, they promoted him to 7th.

My other nephew, who is orphaned and was never registered for school or attended any until last year (06-07 year) was started in the 2nd grade. Monday, they promoted him to 4th.

I question whether either of these kids are prepared for the grades they are now in. It's not like either of them had any home schooling or extra tutoring or anything of that sort.

:ot: Lord, why them tropical depression a try mi: TD# 8: http://weather.sun-sentinel.com/tropical/t...00708_5day.html

It's still pretty early on this one. No one is predicting any real path towards JA yet. Fingers crossed!

You know the anxiety of seeing something out there. From the 2 scenarios for the depression, JA seems to be in the clear, but those steering currents can push it on a different course. I am staying focused!

Tam,

Yuh a stress mi out wid dis 'ere blinking tropical depression! LOL  Does the dyam ting even 'ave a name yet? :hehe: I know it 'could' blow weh our dyam pretty likkle island...but then again it could head north and go straight out into the Atlantic!

Yuh nuh 'ave nuf fi stress yuh out...yuh waan tek dis pon yuh head too???!!! Jus' pray, pray pray!!! I'm praying with yuh!:lol:

Love yuh, (L)

Gill

I was going to say something of this sort too. But, having been there and stressed over every report, I know it's easier said then done. Sometimes all you can do is say a prayer and wait.

My son asked me when he got his schedule for HS..... do I have a reading class? I said, nope....doesn't happen after middle school !!!

What???!!!!! :o Doesn't he have an English class? We HAD to take English - or Language Arts or composition or writing or whatever you want to call it - every year of our 4 years in high school. I had to read a TON of books in high school and then write papers on them. Not a problem for me as I love to read - a lot of the kids bought Cliff Notes to try to avoid reading the whole book! But there was no escaping it.

This is crazy. My kids have Enlish lit classes. One is in 6th and one is a sophomore in highschool.

All this to say, it is not enough to warn them about smoking. They also have to be on the lookout for bad mind people dat hate pon dem change fe leave an go farrin.

This is sooooo true. My friends husband checked all his clothes, shoes, and suitcases after he left his house on the way to the airport because he was afraid someone had "planted" something illegal in his luggage! :o He said some people there get so jealous they will do anything to ruin it for you.

Dyam Rhonda, I didn't even think about that!!! Gotta get on the horn and Let Ken know fi go through HEVERYTING wid a fine tooth comb! Before he even thinks about hitting that airport!

Good looking!

Thanks,

Gill

Wow. I didn't think of that either.

I can remember being in Customs in Raleigh, N.C. and seeing an officer with a dog walking around. My heart started pounding as I wondered if he would smell anything on my luggage as it was in a room at Andre's house that was heavy with fumes most the time. Never even thought, what if someone planted something in my luggage as a joke?

I am always paranoid now that I can't put a lock on my bag. Back in the day there were horror stories that baggage handlers who had drug links may put drugs in your bag after they were checked in. Never really heard of anyone who it happened to, but I don't pack anything in my bags to take up for anybody, unless it's my father. I don't trust people like that. They will do things like that to you. My step-sister, though she was caught up in the game, was given "rum" to take up with her. Turns out it was liquified cocaine. Got jail time in NY and then was deported back to JA.

Now, that is just wrong. Shame on whoever tricked her.

:ot: Ladies - Are your husbands going to apply for citizenship when the 3 yrs is up? Can you have DUAL citizenship - both Jamaican and U.S.? Tony said he doesn't want to give up his JA one, but he would like to have dual. Does anyone know?

My husband insists that he doesn't want to file for citizenship, but I am going to talk him into it. Both his parents are up in age and I want us to file for them so that when 1 partner inevitably dies, the other one can come and move with us. We're going to be taking care of them anyway, by taking care of their bills, so at that point I would want to do away with taking care of 2 households. If for no other reason, I want him to do it for that.

This is the crazy part, the guy who sent her up with the tainted rum, she lives with him in JA :wacko: As I said she has been caught up in this drug mess, so she may have known and may not have. With all the mess she has put my family through, I wish her the best, but she made her bed.

Yes, Ken intends to also...because I need him to VOTE!!! He didn't vote in the recent JA. elections and I totally understood because the Jamaican climate for democracy can be a little tremulous, to say the least.

But, here is a different story and they (Congress & President) could be making decisions that directly effect him. I remember at one time there was talk about not letting LEGAL immigrants collect Social Security after they had paid into it! That killed me because if the Legal immigrants did not become citizens, they had no way for their voice to be heard!

That stuff scares me and he should have a voice! Plus, I intend to become an official JA. citizen after reading the prior post about dual citizenship!!

Not only to vote; but to protect himself. I forget where I read it now; but there were additional legal rights to being a citizen as opposed to not being on. I want him to be protected in case I would not be around to watch out for him.

Yes, I had previously looked into Jamaican Citizenship for myself. I will consider it in the future. Right now, it's not high on my priority list though. I've had about as much paperwork and dealings with government offices as I can take at the moment.

I hear you on that. Going the K-1 route really has you in the immigration system for a while, so I can understand your hesitancy in filling out anything more

I do remember hearing about some rights afforded to citizens that are not afforded to LPR. Plus, having citizenship gives you such an opportunity to affect change where you live. Plus God forbid you get caught up in something and get arrested your residency can be in jeopardy.

Never even thought, what if someone planted something in my luggage as a joke?

i remeber one time mike kiddingly on the way to the airport said oh i packed you some weed....i must have looked at him with death in my eyes...he quickly said i am just kidding....but when i got to philly...guess what they had the drug dogs....if mike would have really done that i think i would have sent a hit man to JA....

Question for you girls this morning...............Has anyone mailed over the counter meds to anyone in Jamaica?

Andre plans to apply.

How about you guys? Jamaican Citizenship anyone?

Did you read my mind? Cause that is another one of my reasons for him to apply for citizenship that I have been running through my head lately too.
