When you are getting married the important thing is to be married not how you were married.

I totally agree!!

BUT -- if you have always had that dream of the pretty white dress and the big party I could totally see how it would be hard to go to the Courthouse. I guess it would feel like you were "settling"

I did call MIA customs and they told me he was admitted to the US at 7:14am our time. Marlon was supposed to call me but probably couldn't figure out the phone card (ie dial 1800#, code, number etc.)

What time are you expecting him???

He arrives at 6:35pm my time (Arizona, it's 11:45am now)

I think I would have so much bottled up energy that I would be trying to run across the country right now to get to him. I have NO patience

lol

How about a queasy tummy, butterflies, no appetite, and bursting with love and excitement?

Donna and I are discussing this now. I believe we first have to marry before the AOS is filed. We are looking at a late October wedding date. The AOS would be mail soon afterwards. I mentioned to her that some people go to the courthouse and get married after arriving. Later they have a reception for family and friends. This would allow us to get the AOS in sooner. As women how do you feel about having your first marriage at the courthouse? I wonder if she would later feel cheated or bad about doing this. Is it worth saving this time by having a courthouse marriage? I would like a women's perspective on this.

We didn't have a big wedding; we got married in Jamaica in our pastor's office on a Thursday afternoon. We preferred to save the money we would have spent on a wedding for something else. The plan is to have a nice celebration for our 10th anniversary.

I love the idea of a park wedding if she does not want to go to the courthouse - great idea, luvtravlin

I have been looking at the forms required for AOS. Form I-131, Application for Travel Document is listed. Is this form part of the new I-485? USCIS shows the fee as $305. I am concerned that Donna's mom may need her there in Jamaica before any of this paper work goes through. Would she have a problem getting back into the country with her current K-1 visa? Her visa is dated to expire the end of November.

The AP fee is included as part of the $1000 you pay, so definitely apply for it!

Good morning VJ Yardies!

Just an update with me and my SO - we're thinking about marrying in a private ceremony this Christmas in Jamaica. Then after I graduate and am working we file for the CR1 visa. Only thing I'm concerned about is the tax part because my current part-time job does not meet the income requirements and when I file I will have only been working a year full-time (and we don't have any family/friends willing to sponsor). I guess we'll just have to take a chance.

This is kind of a dumb question - After marrying in December, will I have to file my taxes as married?

Marie,

I'm not sure if it's required BUT by me filing married filing jointly I got an add'l $1000 on my taxes. It's also another proof of relationship.

Correction:

Marie,

Some may say yes and others may say no, just depends on the accountant. I would say yes file Married Filing Jointly and have him apply for a ITIN. I did and I got an add'l $1000 back on my refund. Technically, your filing status depends on your marital status as of 12/31/07. If married then yes you are suppose to file either Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately. However, you can also file head of household IF you have other members in your family to qualify you (not your spouse). But if you choose MFS how is your husband going to file w/o a ITIN? Some choose to file Single and amend their taxes later.

We also got married in the pastor's office. Although I love being married I do feel cheated a bit. We want a "real" wedding so we will do it once he arrives later on in front of friends and family. The date won't be set until he arrives. My mom is already gushing over it and she has nooooo idea we're already married!!
