I'm thinking of flying down to JA tomorrow to salvage some of my vacation. What do you guys think? Does anyone know what type of damage occurred? Or when the airport will reopen? Any information would be helpful

Glad you and the family are ok Rhonda. I would go if I could get a flight.

Rhonda, I would wait a while until water and electricity have been properly restored. Depending on how much damage was done, it could take a while until the utilities come back up.

I wouldn't think it was worth going down with those lacking.

I think the airport does open on Tuesday.

Well I spoke to Melvin this morning and he is fine and everyone else that was in the house. The house suffered no damage but we are just waiting to here from his father in the country. He said the outside is really messed up and everything is everywhere. He is not going to make it to the medical today so I don't know what we are going to do about that. I imagine that they will reopen later this week and that they will see him given the circumstances of the hurricane. He was scheduled to go to the doctor's office in Mobay and from what I understand Mobay didn't have too much damage its just getting there that will be the problem. So, I told him not to worry about it because hopefully everyone will be understanding in this situation. I am scheduled to go down on the 1st of Sept. and that should go as planned  Who knows if the embassy will be open so we can nothing but wait. We are just glad to have survive this storm with life, everything after can wait.

I hope everything is good with your families and friends.

So far no reports on when the airports will reopen. I got this from the Gleaner's website this morning: http://www.go-jamaica.com/news/breaking/re...icle.php?id=115

I hope you are able to go to Jamaica, or at least that Tony is able to come home early. I was equally impressed that the phone service held up so well throughout the storm. I was talking to my husband every hour on the hour.

Still haven't heard from my grandparents who are on the Northwest part of the island, Lucea Hanover. Please keep them in your prayers. My dad says if he doesn't hear from them by 2pm, he plans to drive down. I am just worried about the road conditions on the way down as I am sure Mount Russo may have some mudslides.

Everyone I know in Jamaica is accounted for and ok. No property damage reports as of yet cause they all moved from the coast inland. I suppose today they will all go survey damages.

It cracks me up.....the person who said they are so calm in Jamaica. I was monitoring all weekend on the tropical weather underground website and I kept telling my husband to call his mother and get her to move the kids inland. I was frantic. They are about 50 feet from the coast. I pictured this gigantic wave coming in and sweeping them all out to sea. Lucikly, Sunday morning, she finally did. A huge relief.

We never lost cell phone coverage to any of our friends or family. Tha helped quite a bit in calming my fears. I think I was a bigger wreck then when Andre was actually still living there.

Hello VJ fam,

Thank the Lord for the hurricane finally passing over. My family called every other hour (I was calling every hour) and they were chattin like it was a regular day *lol*. My niece even began reading The Big Green Dog to me. I was listening to Power FM and glued to the Weather Channel as well. Just thankful because things could have been worse.

Everyone have a blessed day!

Cant reach anyone i know :crying: all phones going straight to voicemail and the land line call not even completing.

Same here for us :crying: Andre and I haven't been able to reach any of his brothers, mother, grandmother or aunts and cousins. God only knows how tired my fingers are from dialing all 33 numbers each time (yes I counted  )

Glad to hear that others family is safe and sound...hope those who haven't heard will hear something soon.

Thanks for those links as well...Andre and I did nothing but sit and watch the weather channel.

I remember when I was in contact with Andre while he was in JA and Ivan hit. I was a nervous wreck and he was all calm over the phone. Well the tables definitely turned yesterday. He was all frantic and worried about everyone down there. I think it has a lot to do with the amount of information we have access to. Andre said that when he was in JA he never saw coverage or pictures like he saw on the Weather Channel last night.

Glad to hear that you are safe Rhonda...sorry you had to cancel/postpone your trip. I agree with what someone else said about waiting to hear how the conditions are. A lot of the roads are supposedly covered in debris making traveling very difficult.

Lets keep praying that this is the last hurricane of the season to affect JA
