yup. i figure they do that because it's not a prepaid service. i'm nervous about linking my debit card to something that withdraws money without my control. i spend about $100/month on long distance now and that's tolerable since i know it won't be going on much longer.

It's not without your control. Like I said, they tell you ahead of time what they are going to take out.....give you a complete listing of all calls and charges. You can always dispute and stop payment if need be. In 2 years, I have had absolutely no issues with them whatsoever.

i'd like to revisit the ganja use topic. it sounded like there are some people here that are in the health/mental health field. i know someone (a family member) who takes anti-depression/anti-anxiety medication and she smokes weed. obviously, she's emotionally unstable. she has terrible mood swings and she'd difficult to get along with. now this is her without weed (and yes, she's a hot mess lol). my question is, what is the potential effects of using weed along with these prescriptions?

Weed is not a good thing to use while taking anti-depressants..just makes u more depressed..when she's off she's going thru withdrawal. Let me get some good info for yah on that

My best friend is a daily weed smoker (not all day long though) and she also takes several other medications, for depression for example.....she has NO short term memory. I've been friends with her for 10 yrs....and I have to remind myself all of the time not to say....remember yesterday when I....

I've done soooo much research on this and have material that my son brings home from school....

Effects on the Brain

Scientists have learned a great deal about how THC acts in the brain to produce its many effects. When someone smokes marijuana, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries the chemical to organs throughout the body, including the brain.

In the brain, THC connects to specific sites called cannabinoid receptors on nerve cells and influences the activity of those cells. Some brain areas have many cannabinoid receptors; others have few or none. Many cannabinoid receptors are found in the parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.

The short-term effects of marijuana can include problems with memory and learning; distorted perception; difficulty in thinking and problem solving; loss of coordination; and increased heart rate. Research findings for long-term marijuana abuse indicate some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term abuse of other major drugs. For example, cannabinoid (THC or synthetic forms of THC) withdrawal in chronically exposed animals leads to an increase in the activation of the stress-response system and changes in the activity of nerve cells containing dopamine. Dopamine neurons are involved in the regulation of motivation and reward, and are directly or indirectly affected by all drugs of abuse.

Effects of Heavy Marijuana Use on Learning and Social Behavior

Research clearly demonstrates that marijuana has the potential to cause problems in daily life or make a person's existing problems worse. Depression, anxiety, and personality disturbances have been associated with chronic marijuana use. Because marijuana compromises the ability to learn and remember information, the more a person uses marijuana the more he or she is likely to fall behind in accumulating intellectual, job, or social skills. Moreover, research has shown that marijuana’s adverse impact on memory and learning can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off.

Students who smoke marijuana get lower grades and are less likely to graduate from high school, compared with their nonsmoking peers. A study of 129 college students found that, among those who smoked the drug at least 27 of the 30 days prior to being surveyed, critical skills related to attention, memory, and learning were significantly impaired, even after the students had not taken the drug for at least 24 hours. These "heavy" marijuana abusers had more trouble sustaining and shifting their attention and in registering, organizing, and using information than did the study participants who had abused marijuana no more than 3 of the previous 30 days. As a result, someone who smokes marijuana every day may be functioning at a reduced intellectual level all of the time.

More recently, the same researchers showed that the ability of a group of long-term heavy marijuana abusers to recall words from a list remained impaired for a week after quitting, but returned to normal within 4 weeks. Thus, some cognitive abilities may be restored in individuals who quit smoking marijuana, even after long-term heavy use.

Workers who smoke marijuana are more likely than their coworkers to have problems on the job. Several studies associate workers' marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers' compensation claims, and job turnover. A study among postal workers found that employees who tested positive for marijuana on a pre-employment urine drug test had 55 percent more industrial accidents, 85 percent more injuries, and a 75-percent increase in absenteeism compared with those who tested negative for marijuana use. In another study, heavy marijuana abusers reported that the drug impaired several important measures of life achievement including cognitive abilities, career status, social life, and physical and mental health.

Addictive Potential

Long-term marijuana abuse can lead to addiction for some people; that is, they abuse the drug compulsively even though it interferes with family, school, work, and recreational activities. Drug craving and withdrawal symptoms can make it hard for long-term marijuana smokers to stop abusing the drug. People trying to quit report irritability, sleeplessness, and anxiety. They also display increased aggression on psychological tests, peaking approximately one week after the last use of the drug.

I personally don't smoke, never have....and none of my friends that I hung out with growing up did (we just are social drinkers). I have a cousin that smokes everyday, and he is goofy. I have seen the effects of the HEAVY (we're talking an all day for over 10 yrs usage) 1st hand and I know for a fact that there are serious effects from the years of the abuse and the jamaican weed (as he tells me) is ALOT stronger than what we have here, more proof that he's messed himself up!!!

Hope the information helps....

Is there something in the air in Jamaica? Marlon was in Kingston on Tuesday getting money together for the no impediment form when his car was towed! He had to pay $3300JA to get it back and almost had to pay more because it was getting too late!

I just ordered phone service through Cox and now I pay 45 cents per minute rather than $1.09 a minute with T-Mobile and I get the phone service free for 6 months!

*sigh*

sounds like several of our fellas had a bad day in kingston.

dang girl t-mobile is high! are they charging you a monthly access fee in order to get that rate? the wal-mart phone cards are 50 cents a minute.

i've been racking up horrendous phone bills ever since i stopped using my prepaid phonecard service. i pay 38 cents/min and a 4 dollar monthly fee. i was going to look at ringyard but now fiance has mega fone (even thought it ain't working right now).

Nah, T-Mobile is just a flat dial and for Cox it is only 99 cents per month and the 45 cent rate. I like the fact that I can talk as much as I like and pay later. *shrug*

I also have T-Mobile but I don't call from my cell. But I do have AT&T (landline) and it's 35 cents a min to call JA. Be careful Sarah b/c those bills will rack up before you know it. I used to call daily but haven't in a while. Just can't see myself paying all that phone bill and then also paying for these immigration fees as well. I finally got out of phone debt and I'm not going back

Thank you everyone for the tips and advice! Marlon did try to get a megaphone but it does not work in Clarendon. When he does call me he goes to his mom's and uses his sister's megaphone in Kingston. I don't call him often, maybe once a week but with a hopeful interview coming up I will need to talk to him more.

I called the embassy today. My DS230 Part 1 is still not in the system there. Donna sent it by way of DHL from her work there in Kingston last Tuesday the 11th. Is there a way to find out if the package arrived at the embassy? I'm I too anxious and not allowed enough time for them to record the form? I think I would feel better if I knew for sure the embassy had the part 1.

Oh my gosh girl props to you!! How do you survive?? Once a week. I couldn't survive in back in the day. I just programed ring yard number on my cellphone and would call like 5 times a day. You are strong! Does he have internet? Dwain had internet but we still needed to talk 5 times a day to make sure each other were alright.

I told you guys.........3UTelecom........17 cents a minute. No monthly fees, connection fees, whatever.....And, they charge you to the second instead of rouding up to the minute every call. We've had it now for nearly 2 years. Best thing I ever did.

I am like Rhnonda and us ringyard.com cause its 19 cents a minute. 3UTelecom is the same rate for cell phones in Jamaica at 19.9 cents per minute. I use my debit card and buy a phone card ever time ours runs out. Its great because it doesn't keep recharging without your permission. :)!!!! The mega phone we aren't going to tell Dwain's mom about that because she would call 5 times a day. Dwain is enjoying his freedom and says its nice to only have Sunday phone dates. His best friend can call him during the work day for free from his company in JA and most of his friends have internet so my phone bills have gone down.  This is something to dance about.

i'm curious as to how our phone bills are going to be once he moves here. for a long time i was like futuremrs and only called him once a week. it sucked but i just couldn't afford it. thankfully, he got a phone capable of sending text messages so we text eachother a lot too. he doesn't have internet, that could've saved a lot of money in phone bills too.

Well I let Dwain call his friends when he got here. I bought a 50 dollar phone card from ring yard. This was crucial because he wanted to tell everyone what it was like here. He still has money on it. He called yesterday to one of his friends at the liquor store telling him how cheap it was here. This friend is coming up to visit in August and making plans to take alcohol down. Oh my as we speak a friend called and he is shouting its awesome here. I would set a budget for him and everything will be ok.
