I MADE A BIG MISTAKE! PLEASE READ CAREFULLY SO MAYBE YOU DO NOT FOLLOW MY ERROR!

As soon as I saw "Ready" on CEAC, I completed my Fiance's DS-160 and then scheduled her interview. I had not received the Packet 3 from Ecuador yet.  In the beginning of the DS-160, you are given several options to choose from once you create the account. Such as, "I have received packet from Embassy and need to apply for NON-Immigrant Visa", "I have received packet from Embassy and need to apply for Immigrant Visa" or "Other". I chose "Other" since at that moment, I had not received the Packet yet. I had do my research ahead of time on the Packet 3. The Packet 3 on their website is not the same packet 3 they sent us. Imagine that.

I completed the DS-160 ok and even scheduled the interview. But I was never prompted to pay. Once I received Packet 3, I learned there are 3 ways to pay. I could not figure out the first 2, because of my mistake they were no longer available to me. So I called the Customer Service number 3 times. The 3rd call I had someone to help me. By default, I completed her information through the NON-Immigrant process. For this portion of the process, DS-160 refers to K1 as Immigrant. They had to cancel the interview, let me correct my mistake online and then redo the interview. The interview date was no longer available. I have already purchased a planed ticket and we have scheduled activities based on the first interview date.

I am suppose to call the Embassy back today after 2:00. I am hoping they can give me back the original interview date since it must still be available. I think maybe the system resets at sometime.

As I write this, my Fiance is getting her Medical Exam completed and I haven't told her yet. I am hoping she doesn't get home until after I have an answer about rescheduling the interview. My mistake may cost us 5 days longer to be together and the money to correct my plane ticket. I know is not that huge. But she is counting on me to bring her home and I SCREWED this up!

Hey, thanks for this call-out. I'm hoping to not make the same mistake. I'm not totally clear on what to do though -- can anyone clarify?

I received an email today confirming the NVC will forward my case to the US Embassy in my fiancee's country. The email states:

Quote

In the meantime, please have your fiance(e) and his or her children visit http://ceac.state.gov and complete Form DS-160, the online nonimmigrant visa application that is used for a K visa.

Based on your experience, are you suggesting I wait until I have instructions from the embassy to have my fiancee fill out her DS-160? Or is it okay to go ahead and have my fiancee (the beneficiary)

Also, this email refers to it as a "nonimmigrant visa application", but you say:

What did you mean by this? I only see an option for DS-160 nonimmigrant visa on the CEAC website.

Thanks for any help you can provide! Really just wondering if my fiancee should go ahead and fill out the DS-160 while we wait for instructions from the embassy to contact us or wait.

For London the packet 3 is an email. So yes, you can go ahead and book.

It all depends on the consulate :)

It is true, you can book. BUT BE CAREFUL. Different Embassy's have different processes. If you book before receiving Packet 3/4, like I did, you do not have the information on their guidelines.

I am being very adamant about this because it has caused us many problems because I did not wait. Everyone has waited a long time to get to this stage. Consider wait another 24-48 so you know you are playing with the correct procedures for your Embassy

Not myself at that stage yet, but have been reading quite a lot about that part too. There's people that started working on the DS-160 even before getting their NOA2, and some people also say the form is quite long and detailed in the information you have to provide. So I would say go ahead and start filling it out, just don't submit it until your embassy contacts you for the next step.

You have to make sure you save your application ID written somewhere, so you can retrieve the form to edit it or finally submit it at any moment.

Regarding the immigrant/non-immigrant part, DS-160 is non-immigrant, but the K1 is processed by the immigrant visa consular section at the Embassy. When you track it at the ceac website is also listed as immigrant... sorry, not sure what you are asking regarding this part :)

But I think when you are filling the DS-160 it will show you K1 as an option along with immigrant/non-immigrant. Anyway, sure you'll get the answer you are waiting for from Wayne soon.

If you complete the DS-160, it can not be changed later. Only takes 20 minutes. Saving 20 minutes now really doesn't get you to the finish line any faster.

Okay great. I'll hold off until we have all the info we need.

Let me explain what this has cost me. First the interview date is now 5 days later. I need to rebook my flight. More $$$$$.

Our original schedule.

7/10 I drive from KY to Cleveland to spend the day with my mom. Plane tickets are $300 cheaper from CLE to GYE.

7/11 Flying to see my Fiancé.

7/12 Interview

7/13 Vaccination shot for my Fiancé and our last opportunities to go to our favorite beach to celebrate our interview.

7/14 Grocery Shopping with my "Ecuadorian Mommy" for our farewell dinner on 7/15.

7/15 Farewell dinner with her entire family. Invitations are being printed, family coming from out of town.

7/16 I get to attend with her as her last worship time at her church.

7/17-7/20 hopefully she has Visa in hand so we can come home.

I put all of this at risk by 1 mistake. Right now I am talking daily to the Embassy to allow our interview back to the original time. I am asking them to make an exception. I feel they will. But not sure yet. Everyday now, my Fiancé is asking for updates that I can't provide!

Hate asking this because I know the answer is probably "it varies" but does anyone know the average time it takes for an embassy to email (in our since Rio doesn't physically mail them) the instructions once they have the info from the NVC?

Oh wow okay. Because I noticed some people say that their case number was assigned the same day it was received

Wow thats crazy fast!

From my experience NVC recieved my packet 2 weeks after my NOA2 and assigned a case number about a week after they recieved it.

Everything I have learned. Imagine it is in the mailroom. Once it is delivered to someone's dish for processing it should be relative quickly. 1-2 days.

Maybe those who received a case number almost immediately - it took a while for uscis to transfer the case to NVC.

It took 3 weeks for NVC  to receive my case and they assigned a case number the following day. Bringing it to the standard 3 weeks a person would wait from NOA2 to case # assigned.

Now, I am hoping it will take the standard 5 days or less to get to the embassy.

Is the email sent to the filer or the beneficiary? My case is 'ready' at NVC so I assume I just need to wait for the email now?
