Travel ban for Philippines?

New guidance on this is apparently it's not going to happen for now, but a law group cautions that since the EO came without warning under the directive that if they told anyone it was happening people would 'get around it', they could decide to implement it at whatever time they see fit.

Ok, I can see that happening. Thanks for the info.

I don't see the ban happening at this time either. However we have made plans to fly my wife and step son here a week from Monday. I had some money saved as I planned on moving closer to work first but we decided to change our plans in case anything unforseen happens.

Gosh I just looked up the prices one way from Manila to ORD and yeah Cathay Pacific is over $2k right now that is insane. I would recommend ANA, Asiana, or Korean Airlines, or even Japan Airlines. There are some cheap Middle East airlines on there BUT you would spending alot of time in the air flying from Manila to Dubai/Doha and then on to Chicago. I DO NOT recommend Gulf or Etihad at all espeically on the Manila to Abu Dhabi/Manama section of flight. They tend to use the worst plane they have and it is literally like cattle class, trust me I have done it before and I was not happy about it.

I found a flight on Google flights I am going to look into. It is JAL from Manila to Tokyo then American Airlines from Tokyo to Chicago. $1400 for the two tickets. I see it says both flights have wifi. I have never been on a flight with wifi. Have any of you? What are the speeds like? Looks like it is $19 for wifi on the AA flight. The cheapest flights I see are on the various Chinese airlines. Anyone ever fly on any of those?

$1400 for 2 seats 1 way mnl-ord just a week out is in my estimation unheard of.  Book it NOW.  I've flown JAL-AA 3 times and no problems whatsoever, except on 1 AA transpac leg the entertainment system was down.  Just more time for sleep :).  Hopefully the transpac will be on a JAL plane and not AA. Much more enjoyable.

Transit through NRT is fast and easy, as was POE at ORD.

I was going to wait for my wife to pick up the cfo stickers on Monday to make sure there are no issues then book the flight. Maybe I will just go ahead and book it sooner. The flight from mnl to Japan is on jal. The other flight is AA.

Flew AA / JAL last April. The MNL-Tokyo (and vice versa) was wonderful. That was the JAL leg. NRT to Dallas, the AA leg was absolute hell. I would never fly AA again after that. I was traveling with a toddler too. Oh boy.

But like PPs said, you're getting a good deal with regards to price. Just tell your fam to lower their expectations so that they'll be pleasantly surprised.

Can you elaborate on what issues you had with AA? That would help me make my decision. How is the in flight entertainment and the food? My wife is traveling with my 9 year old step son and he will need something to keep him occupied. The good thing versus Cathay Pacific is the longer flight is only 11 hours versus 17 hours.

I am at work right now and my wife sent me a message that they are talking about a travel ban for the Philippines to the US on the news. I haven't had much time to read about it but a quick Google search brought up some articles about a ban for the southern Philippines.  My wife and step son have their visas and I was going to fly them here in about a month. I have enough money for plane tickets now. Should I get them here asap to avoid any issues or is there nothing to worry about?

I just heard in the news here in philipnes which  is reliable source ..the department of state already said there is no ban for the philipipines..but... on the next month when trump's gabenet will starting to sit down ..they will talk about that issue which are countries need to be ban.but hopefully philippines wont be include.

Issues?: US flag carrier vs. foreign. ie level of provided passenger attention.. service provided by grandmothers vs. ?????. You get my drift. On 1 out of 3 transpac flights the entertainment was not operational. Big deal for some but for me, so what!

Food... None of it is gourmet cuisine, but JAL was better in my opinion. JAL wifi was cool and usable more of a novelty than a necessity for the casual traveler. I paid the $20 for the flight duration just to do it.  Can't even remember if it was available on AA.  Won't buy it again.

Recommend that Lisa and son travel with a cell loaded with personal music list, notepad to record thoughts along the way (historical memento), and maybe a favorite book or mag.

On the transpac leg you'll sleep, or try, for 6; eat for 2; and ??? for the other 3. Word of caution: leave extra food & snacks on the plane at ORD.  We took uneaten subs with us in our carryon and ended up getting an overweight, wide belt wearing, end of shift woman (I think) bag inspector after passing through the final immigration paper turn in checkpoint. We checked off 'Not bringing in any food'. Wrong answer. She went off when she saw the still wrapped subs in my wife's bag :). Welcome to the US!

This alone, regardless of the entertainment and food, would make me consider that airline, but that's just me.

I found a flight for $1500 for both tickets. Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong then United the rest of the way. Is there any difference between AA and United that makes the ticket worth paying a little more? I know Cathay Pacific is a decent airline so I'm not worried about that part.
