I do have a question. My 1 year extension ends on 2/22/18. Will I need to apply for another extension for work purposes or can I continue on the existing 1 year permit? Does any one have some guidance they can share if you are in a similar position?

Schedule an infopass appointment to get an i-551 stamp. Do it well in advance because most likely you won't find any available spots sooner than 2 weeks from when you book your appointment.

 

My extension ends in April 2018, but the DMV only extended my driver's license until February 2018 (they used the date in the extension letter instead of the date on my 2-yr GC). I got my stamp in January 2018, and it's good until January 2019.

We have a joint account where he transfers money from his other account too. We didnt want to co mingle our finances in any which way for private reasons, so we have no joint utility bills, credit cards, car insurance or what everyone seems to have.  We do have flight tickets, however the joint ones were after we filed as the other ones, well i went ahead to prepare my son's house in the UK for the arrive of hubby and his sons.  Then we did take a trip to Dublin after we filed for ROC, but they weren't submitted. I did enclose a cover letter to say we had not got many joint anything, but i didn't go into a vast explanation as to why, because its personal and i will only expand on the reason if they ask via RFE or an interview. Let's hope the ROC journey is over shortly for all of us and like you i shall be concentrating on the N400, joy of gathering more information about our marriage.

So you got your stamp 3 months before your GC expiration date?

Yes I did Before I went in, I wasn't sure if I was going to get the stamp. I told them it was for my driver's license renewal, so maybe that helped.

I dont know if we should get it 3 months before or 1 month before. What happens if you don't get it? Do you fall out of status?

I think if you don't NEED it for anything, you could wait until it's closer to the expiration date. I was risking it so that I won't need to go to the DMV multiple times in a few months. I also need it for some clearance at work.

 

I don't know what would happen if you failed to get the stamp after the letter has expired. I heard your status would still be the same. You just no longer have proof of legal status, but don't quote me on this.

In another reply on here I was told to get it a month before GC expires and others say before the letter. So I'm trying to figure out exactly which one it is.

According to the officer who stamped my passport, it's the date on your GC.

So would a month before GC expiration date be sufficient? Or do you think 2 months before? His work may ask for proof of continued legal status.

You can follow my/our updates... Feb filers by pressing the follow button at the top of the subject.  I have to have a sense of humour through this as we all had to during AOS.(which was another long journey)  Many members for AOS got really close and we became friends after that process was finished. I love this forum most of the time as people are so nice and share important info and it would be wonderful for you to share too!

Generally speaking, a month should be fine. I think he should communicate with his work to find out what kind of proof they need. For some employers, they don't care as long as you continue to renew your status at the right time. For some government positions, you may require to show a work authorization document that is valid for at least 5 years before they can extend the offer.

 

If you prefer to get the stamp well in advance and the USCIS office is not too far, I think it doesn't hurt to try
