Hi,

Can you please guide me how to properly file taxes as this is my first time and i dont want to make a mistake. Please guide me. My situation is;

I entered USA on 15 DEC 2015. I didnt file for 2015 as it is just 15 days and i didnt work at all. i asked Vjs and everybody say no need to file that year. ( is that OK when i go for N-400?).

In 2016, i have earned around 11000$ for working a company who deduct my taxes. (I dont know how i filled my W-2 at work as it happen so quickly). I have not received my W-2  yet. Also i worked at a store where they pay me cash and i earned around 6 to 70000$.

My situation is

>   My wife is housewife;

>   I have a son and in novembe had a daughter (i didnt take her ssn no yet as she born abroad and we didnt return USA yet).

> i worked in Newyork and move to missouri in June for two months and didnt work there. (from there we move abroad for baby, family support in other country). Where to file taxes Newyork or missouri. ( i regularly updated my address with USCIS).

can you please guide me how to start. will appreciate your response.

You should get your W2 soon but to whatever address you have on file when you filled it out with your company.  If you don't know what you put down, call the company.

If you worked at a store and paid you cash, it is up to you if you want to report it but I am more than sure that the store owner did not report you as an employee.  If so, he would have to pay wage taxes on your pay as well as you having to pay them.  So you don't have to include that but rightfully you are supposed to even though most people dont report cash.

As for your kids, you should be able to claim both of them and your wife so 3 dependents.  You file state taxes for the states that you worked in but it matters where you were considered a resident for that tax year.  In other words, if you lived in New York for most of the year, then you would be considered a NY resident for that year.

If things get too hectic for you, you can always search out a Portuguese speaking accountant.

One idea is to use Turbo Tax and go step by step trying to understand the process as you go. There is also a free one by H&R Block

https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/taxes/hr-block-review/

You might be able to get free help at some Credit Unions but generally the help is not great, at least that is what I have heard. You could use that as a starting point though, to get some topics explained to you. (but don't submit the taxes until you do more research). Similarly places like H&R Block will help you with the taxes although once again they are not accountants and only get some quick training.  It might be enough for your situation.

It is probably best to get an accountant. Ask your friends, co-workers, family for recommendations because just like immigration lawyers you want to get a good one. But that will likely cost a few hundred dollars.

Give yourself PLENTY of time to learn what is needed and you should be OK.
