Hold on a second - I may be blissful in my ignorance.

So what are the next steps after the oath and after passport ..... Do we need to update everything ? and what does it mean , do we just go there and give them a copy of the naturalization certificate or do they have to reissue everything ?

As @Stevephoto, mentioned after naturalization it makes sense to update Social Security, and register to vote (you don't have to but I think you should) I don't know about updating DMV, I think that may be state specific, I may be wrong @Stevephoto can you elaborate on that.

Passport is good to apply for as soon as you have been sworn in as that is 1 proof of US citizenship.  And if you have travel plans, it is good to have that done sooner than later.

One can apply for a passport right after you have been sworn in on your Oath ceremony (i.e. Same day) because that is the earliest you are categorized as a US citizen and that is the earliest you get in your hands the Naturalization Certificate that proves you are a US citizen  - which is a one of the requisites for the passport applicaton.

It is recommended to give SSA 10 days after oath ceremony but if you want to make a mad dash ??to the nearest SS office right after your oath, it is ok, too.  You have your NC in hand so you have the proof.  The rationale behind why you want to update SS is that previously, your data shows you as a non  US Citizen.  So it is good to update for a couple reasons such as:  for work verification and eventually for your benefits.   I believe one can get a new SS card in yoru mailbox as early as maybe 2 weeks after you update via your local SS office.

Some people choose to do the passport first, some choose to update SS first.  I think it is your choice.  The SS card issued to you as a Green Card holder is still valid.  That is not taken away when you have your data updated with SS.  Your SS number will stay the same.

Processing time for passports is 6 - 8 weeks although, in most cases it is quicker than that.  And even quicker if you opt to go the expedite route - just more money.  My thoughts are that if you are not travelling anytime soon, regular processing is fine.  Save the expedite fee for the passport card which is recommended to have.  I think sometime in the next year or years, the DL will not be enough as a form of ID going through passing security checks (airport), etc.  Passports will be the ID form that will be needed by then if not already in some states.

Depending upon where you apply, sometimes the execution fee is waived and there is a discount if you apply for both passport book and passport card.

You can register to vote same day as when you have your oath ceremony.  This can be done online, as well.

DMV update. I am not sure if this is actually required.

Best of luck!!!! And hope this helps.

Good overview @m8cl!! The one thing I would add is the passport card is a great thing to have as even when you travel overseas you can carry that in your wallet/purse and leave your passport in your hotel..

Also only certain states Drivers licenses won't be compliant so that you can't use your drivers ID as Identification when flying. Sorry, I cannot. As you said, every state is different, but there are various references about going to DMV after getting citizenship/passport here on VJ. Probably wouldn't to go ad update your status anyway.

Good question and i did a quick internet search on a couple of travel related message boards (Tripadvisor, Fodors etc) and many people used it with success especially in Europe where national IDs are pretty standard. I think it depends on the country and if the police will stop you to check that you haven't overstayed but I definitely intend to get one and carry in my wallet, may make a photocopy of the passport/visa/entry stamp and carry also. Just a thought.

BTW Thank you also for the reputation!
