Holly cow! Why stay with people who disrespect you so much?

Say them good bye and offer to fly to the US for your anniversary.

It was really a good q about how your husband is taking care of this issue with his relatives?!

Sorry that you have really bad experience in India. Its not about the country but the people as everywhere you find good and bad people. However, I think you should try to involve media (local news) here. They will get story and you will get freedom. In their presence Police also will work properly. If you like the idea, you can contact them and ask to come with Police:

I wasn't talking about my experience, rather the law that you cited.. does not exist.

Your posts haven't been exactly forthcoming; you may have your reasons, but you've been quite insistent..since last year.. on POEing after your 2nd anniv. Hubby's CR1 visa was issued over 4 months ago. If my well-being\safety were at risk, and I was being held up against my will, I'd be leaving asap? Screw the plane tkts, no reasonable persons spends 6 weeks being borderline kidnapped.

As noted earlier, something doesn't quite add up.

Thank you yet again for your very helpful input, all knowing one. I'll be sure to tell the next hotel owner, who does indeed say it's a "policy" of theirs not to allow local residents to stay at their hotels, to definitely let us stay there because KierenHby from visa journey said so. I've read other posts about people staying where they are after their 2nd anniversary to travel to the US, it's really not a new concept.

Something isn't adding up because you're not very good at math (:

Can your husband simply kick the door out in the night before your flight and leave with you? Is it some kind of a safe door that he can't break through or you're afraid that his family will attempt and is capable of to violently stop you both? Like you know, I respect my parents, but if they would try to lock me in the bedroom with my wife to prevent us from catching flight when I'm a grown up married man and is responsible for my life decisions, I would break this door in a minute and leave with my wife right away to the airport. Is it possible for you and your husband?

I think this will be the least of your troubles if your husband cannot man up and come up with a plan. How hard is it for him to disappear with you to another city?

Seems like we women are always fighting battles that are not meant for us.

It is your husband's family and he should be the one handling them. Not you out here trying to device a get away plan.

What is he doing?

You need to have some serious talks with your husband. Cos if he isn't matured enough to handle his family meddling in his relationship, guess what, the family will manipulate him here all the way from India.

I wish it were that simple. My husband's family is obsessively controlling. It's not really about manning up as much as it is about being smart. This is India, where adult men and women are sometimes burned to death for having sex outside of marriage. Where you can bribe police to do anything. If laws were enforced here, then we would have the law on our side and we could get help from local law enforcement. However, that's not India, and it's not always guaranteed. They could hurt him or even worse. There are alot of them, and 2 of us.

Agreed, but they do so by choice; their in-laws aren't insane, overly controlling types who keep an adult son and his USC spouse locked up.

Something isn't adding up because you're not very good at math (:  Thanks for the compliment.

A condescending post doesn't quite help. I may be all-knowing, but my wife has a slightly different take on that :)

Your best bet is to figure a way to slip out and be on the earliest US flight. ROC pales in comparison to the risks described.

Op.. you've been told how to fix this situation.  You're choosing not to at this point. Best of luck with the crazy in laws.

I don't know how I came across this post or if you still in the same situation but I'm from India too.

I'm sorry that you are going through this but I wish to tell you that your husband's family is one of a kind and not in a good way.

That said, here's something you can do:

1. Call the local Women's police station. I'm assuming Nagpur has one.

2. You say that bribery does the trick sometimes but let me tell you, screaming that you will go to the media will do the trick too.

3. If they get violent, fight back! Don't be afraid.

4. Be smart and devise a plan! I'm sure your in-laws won't figure it out seeing that they probably belong to the stone age.

5. You REALLY need to go to the Embassy! I read that you are afraid that they won't help your husband but right now, it's better if one of you can get out instead of both! Once you contact the Embassy officials, your husband can run away from home! Instead of you both trying to run away at the same time and failing, why not try this?

6. I'm assuming that you are using a cellphone to post this, then can't you Google some numbers for local domestic shelters?

7. The hotel situation is really surprising to me too! After all, you two are married. I don't know how I can help you there.
