What to do if my husbands family trys to stop us from catching our flight to the US?

Hello, Im not sure if this is the right place to post this question, but my husband does have a CR1 visa. Im a US citizen, and my husband is Indian. We currently live with his family in India. Recently we've been having a lot of problems with them. They don't want him to leave, and have even been threatening us. Before you ask, we've tried moving to a hotel here but apparently there's a policy in India that prohibits residence of the same city from staying in local hotels, that's at least what we've been told by virtually every hotel here. Im registered in this city (something we had to do to get married) and I have to get my passport stamped by the frro up to 7 days before I leave India. So we're stuck in this city. My husband and I are afraid that his parents will lock us in our room (which they've done before) the day of our flight. I don't trust the local police. We've dealt with them before and they're really skeevy, you can also bribe them to do just about anything, and my husbands family has much more money than we do. Im afraid if I get the US embassy involved they would only help me, and not my husband since he's not a USC. If I leave him here I know they will hurt him (very long story), so Im not going to do that. What should we do? They lock the door from the outside at night so we can't leave, and there are always people here during the day. If I notify the embassy of our situation would they be willing to help both of us?

Thank you

Do you have to tell them when your flight is?

Couldn't you get your passport stamped 7 days prior and then go stay in a hotel in another city until your flight leaves?

What if you say that only you leave and he will just take you to the airport?

Can see it's a while ago that the visa got approved, what date does it say he has to use it by?

Can't you guys find some kind of excuse that you need to go to the embassy for some issues with the visa something something so you can be alone and then take off?

I would camp out vs staying in a hotel. Even to the point of staying at the airport or getting on the first flight out of there.  Locked in your room? Really? Time to go asap!!

I vaguely recall your previous posts. Something just smells odd here.

There are no laws that prohibit a married couple from staying in local hotels. None. Nada. Zero. Zilch.  I'm a USC, and I stayed in a local hotel with my Indian wife after our wedding. As an Indian national, your hubby should have had no issues booking a room under his name.

He has applied for visas in the past, and would obviously have traveled to the US had he been granted a student visa. Why is his family so vehemently opposed to him leaving India now? His family might not have accepted you, but your husband is an adult with the right to live life as he desires. He would've had a sense of his family's opposition In the two years since being married to you. Once you reached India, he could've gathered his belongings and both of you could've trekked out to Delhi\Mumbai and booked a flight once he has his visa in hand.

As this appears to be a family matter, the US embassy is unlikely to get involved unless a USC's safety is endangered.

"This smells fishy" because most of your "vaguely remembered" information is wrong. My husband was not granted a visa before, nor has he travelled to the US. Maybe you should do your research before calling someone phony. In the city I am currently in, my husband and I have been told we cannot book a hotel in our city because of that "law" by many hotel owners. Why would I lie about that??? I'm glad you've had better experiences in India than we have, but maybe keep the pretension to yourself. I've come here for help, no need to make anything "fishy" up.

Have a good day (:

I think you read the comment wrong Krissyb93.  If others are saying that is not policy all over India, you could try another city then.

Might seem extreme, but if they lock you in your room, could you just call the US embassy from your cell phone?

Or like others have suggested make up some BS story about needing both of you to present at the embassy or the embassy is going to get the police involved because they are concerned over the safety of a citizen.

Its what we've been told. There's also no law that prohibits unmarried couples from staying in hotels together here either, but it's still not easy to do, especially if you're in a less "progressive city". In Mumbai you may be able to get away with things like that, but we're not in a city like Mumbai. Im glad you had a more pleasant experience here (: but your experience doesn't dictate all other experiences.
