There are a lot of factors that have to be taken into account. If you live in a large metro area, the field offices have huge workloads because of heavy immigrant population. For some fingerprinting results are quick, for some it takes long. Relax this process will at least take 6 months minimum if you live in a large metro area.

You will be fine, relax. from the pervious months filers' timelines, it seems like the later you receive you in-line notice, the quicker you will get your interview scheduled. at least the gap in between those two are generally shorter.

Had my interview in Los Angeles this morning. Very pleasant IO and despite a few snafus with the computer system, the interview ended with the IO handing me a form that says 'Congratulations! Your application has been recommended for approval.'. About 4 hours after the interview was over I received a stream of texts and email notifications from the changes to the status of my case which went from

"We recommended that your Form N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION, Receipt Number IOE*******, be approved. On April 4, 2017, your case was submitted for quality review. This is a standard process we use to ensure the quality of our decisions. Once our quality review is done you will be scheduled for an oath ceremony."

Then it changed to

"We placed you in line for your oath ceremony and will send you a notice for Receipt Number IOE*******, with the date, time, and location of your oath ceremony. You should receive your notice within 30 days of its mailing date. Please follow the instructions in the notice."

to

"We scheduled your oath ceremony for Receipt Number IOE******. We sent a notice with the date, time, and location of your oath ceremony to the address you gave us. Please follow the instructions in the notice. If you do not receive your notice by May 4, 2017, please go to www.uscis.gov/e-request to request a copy of the notice."

So it looks like the oath ceremony will be on April 18th if I have been scheduled for the next ceremony in Los Angeles. I should know for sure tomorrow when the notice PDFs have been added to my online USCIS account.

How can you file Online ?

Was never given that option . Had to print the n400 form and mail it in.

Still no updates to my case after fingerprinting was done .

Here is the explanation. I have a green card through marriage which expires in May this year after 10 years. In November (6 months before the GC expiration date), I filed an I-90 GC renewal application online using the USCIS website https://myaccount.uscis.dhs.gov/. As part of this process, I set up an online USCIS account which allowed me to fill in the I-90 information online and also scan the supporting docs and attach them to the application as PDFs. Just like the USCIS Case Status feature, you can set up the USCIS account to send you texts and emails as the case progresses through their system.

When I decided to apply for citizenship in February this year, I was browsing the USCIS website and came across this page which has an 'Apply' button on it. When I clicked the apply button, it took me through some eligibility questions and then allowed me to respond to the N-400 questions online using my USCIS account. It is quite useful since you can save the application and then log back in and come back to it to finish it off. In my case, I had to track down some of the documents that need to be attached to an N-400 (previous marriage divorce/annulment documents, tax return transcripts etc.) so I could scan and attach them. Once I was ready to apply, I double checked the info, hit apply and it then took me to a credit card payment page where I paid the application fee online on the evening of Feb 9th.

The next day, I got a PDF copy of the I-797C receipt notice in my online account with a priority date of Feb 8th (the date I had started filling out the forms) and 3 days later I received my fingerprint notice (Feb 12th) for a biometrics appointment of Feb 27th, again as a PDF. The paper copies of these notices also get mailed out about 3-4 days after the PDF showed up in my account. I also received automated texts and emails from the USCIS online system letting me know that these changes had been made to the status of my application.

On the day after the biometric appointment, I got a text/email on Feb 28th saying I had been scheduled for an interview appointment (I seem to have skipped the normal 'you have been put in-line' stage for the interview and went straight to scheduled. This took me by surprise since I'd looked at the processing times and wasn't expecting to hear back from them with an interview until around September this year.

Sure enough, on March 1st (less than 30 days after I had first applied), a PDF of the interview appt dropped into my USCIS account with an interview of April 5th. So I had to study for the civics test a lot sooner than expected!

I had the interview yesterday and it went relatively smoothly. The IO at the Los Angeles was very pleasant and professional and the whole process was very relaxed. The only glitches were in the new USCIS computer system that he had to use to make a few small changes to my N-400 before I signed to say it was 100% accurate.

About 4 hours after the interview in the early afternoon, I got a series of texts and emails from their system indicating my application was approved and in quality control, then that I was in-line for the oath ceremony and then that the oath ceremony had been scheduled a notice had been mailed. I expect a PDF of the oath notice will be in my USCIS online account in the next couple of days, possibly for the April 18th ceremony in Los Angeles.

While everybody's personal circumstances are going to be different, despite a few glitches that USCIS are still ironing out of their online application system, I have been pleasantly surprised by the whole experience, especially after reading some of the experiences or delays that others have had, more than likely as a result of the 30% increase in N-400 applications during 2016. In my case, some of the N-400 steps like the post-biometrics background check may already have been performed as part of the I-90 application that I made in November (I did biometrics for the I-90 in early December and that application hasn't progressed since 12/12/16 as I would expect given the processing times for an I-90 renewal). I also think that the fact that with the online application the applicant scans their own supporting documents and enter the answers to the N-400 form online removes a major step, since when the paper version of the N-400 is submitted, it is USCIS staff at the regional centers who have to scan what is sent and transcribe the N-400 answers into their system, so with around 1 million applications/year in 2016, that must make quite a backlog just to get the incoming paper documents scanned and entered and then to start moving the paper file around their system (the IO had my paper file on his desk that was 3-4" thick!).
