Affidavit of support issue

Hi VisaJourney!

I am very confused about my own predicament regarding the Affidavit of Support (I-134).

My fiance is my sponsor but as she is a student, her annual income is -$35 000USD.

I, on the other hand, can prove that I have 16x the minimum 125% income poverty guideline thing in assets (all in stocks, funds, and cash) currently in Europe (around $320 000USD equivalent).

As I would be leaving to go to the USA my current income is, I assume, irrelevant?

Does she need to get her parents to sign as co-sponsors, or if I just show proof of assets in my own name, will this be sufficient?
Please be aware my interview will be at the consulate general in Montreal.

Thanks guys!

I found this regarding the poverty guidelines for 2017. If it's accurate, your fiancé would need to be making $20,025 a year to support a family of two- you and her. I'm a student too and am using a co-sponsor, since there is no way my income is anywhere near that- but I figured I would mention incase she's under 35k but over 20k!

I'm not sure if you can use your own income to 'sponsor yourself' with the affidavit... the only reason I think it would be irrelevant, is because it's not 'continuous' as once you enter the U.S, you are unable to work for some time. Maybe I am wrong- hopefully someone can help you with that part of your question.

I would suggest getting a co-sponsor just to be safe, especially if you do not receive any other answers in relation to using your own assets. You can only have one co-sponsor for the I-134, but can have more (if needed) for the I-864 later on for AOS. I believe that most embassies allow co-sponsors on the I-134, and that only a few do not accept them, so just double check that Montreal accepts them... I would imagine they are fine with it, but this process is full of surprises!  If you get a co-sponsor, they'll just have to fill out their own I-134 form and provide some form of proof of their income, like a tax transcript, and you should be good to go! Good luck, hopefully this will help out a bit!
