Hello,

I am from Asia and has worked for several firms that have a huge presence here in the U.S

I migrated here March 2016 and got married September.  I already have the necessary papers so I can be employed.

I applied for a CSR position in one of the companies here.  I passed the interviews and all the necessary tests.  I did receive a call from them saying that they would like to proceed with hiring me and was asking for me to provide and notify my previous supervisors.  My worry now is when I resigned from my previous job, I just emailed my resume and it was effective immediately. I didnt follow the 30 day policy hence making me not eligible for re-hire. I dont have problems with my performance and all except that I didnt follow the resignation policy. My questions are:

a) How does a prospect U.S employer conduct an employment verification?

b) How does my ineligibility for re-hire impact my possible employment with the new company? If this impacts/matters at all

c) Is calling my previous supervisors already a verification of employment?

d) How much details are needed during an employment verification?

e) I already had one company who performed international background check on me and the results came okay but how different is employment verification from a background investigation?

I really am excited for this new job and I cant wait to get started.

As always, I appreciate your responses.

Thanks.

  1. In terms of...? As a legal alien pre-GC (assuming your profile status here is up to date), you will likely need to provide your alien number so they can run a check and verify your status before you are hired. Your EAD is your proof of eligibility to work. Do you have a SSN? They will likely ask for that as well.
  2. It depends on the company. Some won't check references, some will check only to verify that you worked there on the stated dates, and some will go more in-depth and ask what you did, and if you left on good terms. That said, there's a lot of US workers that leave their job without a 2 week notice. Or even any notice. So it can impact their decision, but usually (and in most industries) it's a courtesy.
  3. ...probably? Without knowing what they discussed, nobody knows.  But my assumption would be yes.
  4. It varies from employer to employer, but generally the only requirements verified are that you are eligible to work, and information on your resume (schooling, previous employment, etc.) is not falsified. Some employers require a background check, a credit check, license verification (for certain professions), and/or a drug screening.
  5. A background check would be part of their employment verification.

Nothing you've mentioned raises any concerns AFAIK. I wouldn't worry too much about your quick departure from the one job.

Good luck!
