Are pads and tampons taxed but Viagra and Rogaine not?

Ok, relax y'all.  I was just joking about the diaper analogy.  But since the US seems reluctant to untax tampons, perhaps we need a pill that can be taken to diminish or do away with the period altogether.

As for the comment on produce vs. processed foods, I see now that some states do exempt groceries.  I was living in AL, and they do not do that, everything is taxed in the grocery store, so that is what I was used to.

Well try not to be too horrified and have some compassionate understanding of how the process works and cloth just doesn't.

Furthermore, I think I'd also like to see toilet paper not be taxed, as I think we can all agree using a toilet is an essential bodily function. Unless you want to go oldskool or be one with nature and go for leaves.

Or just don't use it at all.  Hands have been washed for centuries in many cultures around the world.  Still are today, in fact.

But I'm with you.  If pads aren't to be taxed, neither should TP be taxed.  And condoms.  And deodorant, too.

forget taxing condoms, condoms should be free altogether. there should be free condom dispensers everywhere.

If condoms are free and readily available..what will young men store in their wallets?  This idea would destroy a romantic rite of passage

Well for many women, that's what Birth Control is used for. It's not just used for women who don't want to get pregnant at the moment, but for those that suffer from real debilitating conditions relating to their time of the month. I'd like to actually thank ACA provision about birth control, as it personally got my sister medication she needed. You see it's not easy being told you have massive tumors growing inside of you, that you will need an operation, and that you will never have kids before she even reached age 40... but before proceeding she needed particular birth control to shut things down so to speak, an expensive one that wouldn't have been covered pre-ACA. PCOS is on the rise in this country, and young girls are experiencing more problems with hormones, endocrine system and periods than ever before. I'd like to see our industry focus on actually providing better medication on an issue that seems to gross so many people out.

We used to throw our human waste out in the street, that went really well. We also continue to have health crisis and infections arising from fecal matter on unwashed hands and getting into our food system. Why do you think we advise not to drink the water or eat the food in some countries?

Hear, hear!!  I have been carrying my lucky condom in my wallet for almost 17 years now.  And it works!!  Have only had to use it 4 or 5 times, but have yet to get anyone pregnant.  Good ole Lucky!!

But as to what originally inspired this topic... what does a tampon tax have to do with gender equality and women marching?

i'm not sure, outside of the regular assumption that if menstruation were something male bodies had to deal with, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. are you referring to the women's marches that occurred across the globe saturday? because those marches were inspired by oh so much more than tampon tax.

I pay tax on tampons and pads, and I am not complaining about it.  If both sexes menstruated, the tax would still be in place.

I get that there is more to it than just a tampon tax, and some of the reasons are valid.  But I have seen several posts on women's FB feeds talking about the tampon thing.  While I think arguing about the tax is weak at best, I see nothing as to how it relates to gender inequality or women's rights.  Nor do many women I know peronsally, that's why I am asking here, where there is a broader range of ideas.

bold - i totally disagree. as does gloria steinem and many many women.

Quote

Critics of the effort to abolish the tampon tax argue that the sales tax is applied to other necessities like toilet paper and soap and that it would be more effective to redirect funds to the populations hit the hardest by taxes than lose the revenue from consumers who are able to purchase the products. Plus, states would lose out on revenue (in California the tax adds up to 20 million) from taxing products consumers consistently and reliably purchase.

But these critics miss the broader practical and cultural implications of the tampon tax. Soap and toilet paper can be found in public restrooms or shelters. Labelled by many states as “luxury items,” tampons and other feminine hygiene products simply aren’t accessible or affordable for many. Because of their tax category, shelters can’t use federal funds to purchase sanitary supplies and families can’t use food stamps or flexible health spending accounts to purchase feminine hygiene products. And when women don’t have access to safe and effective hygiene products, they risk infection and the shame and humiliation that often surrounds menstruation. As Jennifer Weiss-Wolf explains, “Menstruation is simply different – there is no analogous hygiene need. Period.”

The conversation surrounding the tampon tax points to what we consider “necessary” and whose necessities are prioritized. For Jessica Valenti, similar movements in France, Canada, and the UK as well as efforts to spread supplies and education across developing nations have revealed that “too many governments don’t recognize feminine hygiene as a health issue.” Valenti argues that access to affordable, untaxed hygiene products “is less an issue of costliness than it is of principle: menstrual care is health care, and should be treated as such.”

Outside the US, girls and women often have to miss school or work and risk infection and disease because of the cost and inaccessibility of feminine hygiene products and the general stigma surrounding menstruation. Jyoti Sanghera, the Chief of the UN Human Rights Office Economic and Social Issues Section links menstrual health to human rights, contending that the “stigma around menstruation and menstrual hygiene is a violation of several human rights, most importantly of the right to human dignity.”

The tampon tax may seem like a small battle to fight but the US’s tax codes point to a deeper and far more pervasive inequality that goes unaddressed when women are underrepresented in government.

First off, let's establish that the tampon tax does not only affect women.  It affects whomever is paying for them.  The dad, for his daughters.  The husband, for his spouse.  Women, for themselves.  It's a tax on a product, not against a gender.

Personally, I don't care one way or another on the tampon tax.  But it's a slippery slope.  How far do you go in defining necessities?  Walmart has TP and soap in their bathrooms because they pay for it.  Ditto airports.  ALL places that have public restrooms.  In all of these places, you may or may not find free seat covers.  You may or may not find a tampon dispenser, where one must pay.  Ditto a condom dispenser.  It's up to the store providing the service how much and what types of products they offer in their bathrooms.  The problem with putting pads and tampons in there is their pilferableness, I suspect.  Probably makes it cost prohibitive when women take 5 or 10 instead of 1.

I think it's crazy one can use EBT to buy steak and lobster, but not paper goods (non food items).

As for your comments on razors... when I buy disposable razors (rarely), I buy women's.  They cost a little more, but they are of a higher quality, typically.  I can get several shaves before it becomes too painful.  Not true with the blue "men's" razors.

As for the rest, that's women's fault.  They buy into advertising hype more than men.  Hence the large amount of shampoos and conditioners (and most H&BA items) on the shelf targeting women.  Argan oil (might be only one drop per bottle, but it sells), Vitamin E, and all sorts of other additives that women believe in and buy, even though there is no proof the product is better, just more expensive.
