I have an interview on Monday for a deli counter position at our local grocery store and then an interview on Tuesday for an office position with the State Library (now this one sounds interesting).

My experience throught out the years has all been office related. As it stands I've had no luck in securing an office job so far.

My husband was thinking that the deli counter might not be a good idea. He says that would require being on my feet for 8 hours a day and it's tough espcially when you are no longer a spring chicken (lol). He was a produce manager in his younger years so he's got a good idea about the grocery store business obviously.

This is the situation. I'm 47 years old now and suffer the headaches, the cramps and all the rest of the nasty stuff two weeks before the monthly thing. (Sorry to have to bring this up but trying to explain this). I guess hubby is thinking ahead of being able to stand on my feet for 8 hours and then having to deal with the other at the same time. At least with an office position, it would entail for the most part of sitting. Still would feel miserable but probably wouldn't be as bad as if I was standing all day. I was by the deli counter yesterday while grocery shopping and noticed they have the seafood behind the counter too. I'm not a seafood lover and looking at or smelling the stuff makes me want to puke....lol.

Who knows I might not get hired for either job.

We're not in a life or death situation where I have to have that job right now. I haven't worked in almost 4 years now and I'm going stir crazy.

I thought of just going to that interview anyhow to see exactly what the job entails and if nothing more, it's just more interview experience.

What do you think?

since you already know that you may have a hard time standing for 8hrs and the seafood smells make you queasy, i would call and forgo that interview. true that it's interview experience, but it's also a waste of someone else's time and money if you know that you really don't want that job. your time slot may be given to another person who really needs that job to support their family.

now the office job, i say go to the interview ... for both reasons: the experience and possible job offer!

best of luck in your decision!!!

Gimy is right. If you know you can't do the job (and it sounds like that is exactly what you are saying) due to the smell of seafood, then don't bother going to the interview. As for interview experience, I'd venture to say the people interviewing you at a grocery store won't exactly know how to do a professional interview anyway. I'm saying this based on my experience in retail and sales. Their concept of an "interview" is quite different from what you'd experience in an office.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks all and I'll take the advice of Gimy and Agent Smith. I think I pretty much know how I feel about that grocery job so I will cancel the job interview tomorrow morning and pursue the office one. That's where all of my experience has been for over 20 years now. It would be a waste of the company's time at the grocery store for the interview.

Good luck on the interview. Even if the "concept" of one interview is different from the other, it is still good experience. If you did the interview for the food counter 1 first, you may be more at ease with the second interview. It's all good experience. best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
