Need advice (Used lawyer initially) now dont want lawyer involved

I initially used a lawyer for my K-1. They gave me the geographic form to have my fiance sign when I went to see her in December 2016. When they first gave it to me it had spelling errors all over the place including incorrectly spelling the word "Japan". I had them fix the errors and give me new copies before I left to see her (What are they being paid for again?). To make a long story short, I came back at the end of the month, only needed to give them the signed forms and some of our pictures but couldn't fit me into their schedule to actually meet with them until 2 weeks later....... I finally meet with them and finish everything. They tell me multiple times before I leave that everything would be sent out by the middle of the following week (The week of Jan 9th 2017). Jan 14th rolls around so I decide to call them and they said they just sent it out Jan 13th....  I check these forums where the rest of the Jan 2017 filers are getting their NOA1 in around 8-9 days or less, it has now been 10 days and I called them again only for them to tell me they just sent it out Jan 20th. ... I was livid when I heard that.

So here I am and want to know if there should be any problem with continuing the process without them. I know on my paperwork they sent out they added their own details as well for anything like the receipt to be mailed to them as well as me. I just want to handle the rest of the process without any lawyer now as I was advised to do by multiple family members from the start. I already paid these jackals $1200

Since this is a DIY site the vast majority of us here will agree that a lawyer is not needed. You can find everything you need to continue with your visa here.

I encourage you to study the guides here.

Sorry you had to experience one of the possible disadvantages of using a lawyer.

Thank you, I will be using the guides on this site, but my petition and the payment was already sent out by the lawyer on Jan 20th. Is there anything that would be an issue by cancelling the Lawyer. I already assume it would be a good idea to make sure to have the laywer give me all copies of any documents I may not have before hand but I want to know about anything else that may cause an issue with the case or where stuff is being sent if I no longer use the lawyer.

No worries. As long as your info is the primary receiver of the information you should be okay. You just need to make sure it doesn't get sent to the lawyer or that they forward anything on to you.

As someone who went through the same issue, I suggest you take control of your case. I paid my lawyer 900$ which I will be going to the office to ask for my money back sometime this week. She promised me that he will be here middle of December, Misspelled errors, even gave me the form of affidavit of support that belongs to the green card rather than the correct one that belonged to the k-1. Misspelled his name and lastly when I confronted her, she stated "how am I suppose to know how Jamaica do their things." I was livid !!!!!! And figured the rest myself. My fiancée is on his way now to pick up the visa at the embassy. And moving to Florida on Monday! :)

Ummm... Because it is US immigration and the forms are all available here lol   She shouldn't take on cases she doesn't know "how they do their things" then!  How frustrating for you!

So glad it worked out.  Congratulations!

Thank you all so much for the responses. I greatly appreciate it. Im not sure if the lawyer put me as the primary receiver or not (uh oh) but I know I was put down to receive in some way.

My other, albeit possibly unrelated, question is that my Fiance is a Student in Japan. She is originally from Cambodia but has been studying in Japan for almost a year. Should/Will there be any problem with her getting interview at the embassy in Japan? and would her visa in Japan being purely student based (although she does work too) possibly cause any lag time in our process?

You should get PDF scanned copies of paperwork that lawyer submitted for you. Double check that lawyer is not the recipient of the correspondence.

I am also wondering if writing a letter to where you send i-129f form, that you are the USC applicant and no longer represented by lawyer and to communicate with your contact details.

Nope you're good! As long as your fiance has legal residence in Japan, they can interview there no problem.

Again, if you have a copy of everything that the lawyer sent. Go over it and check the mailing address, see if it's yours or not. If it's not I'm sure you can contact USCIS for a change of mailing address.

With that said, if the papers were sent and as far as you know everything was done right and you don't expect an RFE, the next step will be to wait for the NOA2, and from there it'll all be on you. That point is the pre-interview stage, and it'll give you a clean slate away from the lawyers.

Totally agree with the other people on here. I would go ask for my money back frankly due to their incompetence. The lawyers are making a killing off of filing only a few forms, all of which you can find help with on here.

No, your fiance being in Japan should not be a problem at all if she is on a valid student visa there. She will have to get a police clearance from Japan and Cambodia though.
