When to apply for replacement green card

Hi everyone,

My green card was approved Dec 12th and mailed to me via USPS. Long story short it is still 'in transit' as of Dec 15th and USPS has told me after 6 weeks it's doubtful it will show up in the system. I am abroad at the moment and will be returning to the US in April, using my AP/EAD card. The US embassy in South Africa as well as USCIS both confirmed that in this situation I can re-enter the US using my AP/EAD card.

My question is this:

  • When do I apply for a replacement card? I cannot file online as I am requesting a waiver for the $455 fee as USPS has agreed that the mail was lost in transit and I have proof via track and trace.
  • Should I wait until I am back in the USA to file forms I-90 and I-912? I will only be back in April and my concern is if I apply now they will schedule a biometric appointment date when I am still abroad.
  • Would it be problematic to wait 3 months before applying for a replacement card? A big part of me is praying it shows up in the system....

My EAD/AP card is valid until November so I'm not concerned about it expiring.  I'm just confused as to when the best time would be to file replacement. It would be much easier to wait until I get back to the US and do it once I'm there.

Thank you for your time, I really appreciate any comments or advice.....

Do you have the tracking number, initiated by USCIS when they passed the package over to USPS? If no, then call USCIS, using your IOE # and ask for the tracking number so you can see what stages it has gone through....

Have you submitted a case inquiry for non delivery of the card?

Hi Dee elle,

Yes I have a tracking number with all the various stages and as of today it shows 'still in transit' from Salt Lake City. That was Dec 12th. Track and trace said it will be delivered Dec 17th, but as of Jan 25th still nothing.

I submitted a case inquiry at the end of December. The automated response said I would have a reply by Jan 18th but as of today still nothing.

Thanks so much! I am really hoping someone can shed some light. To go through the whole process without a glitch, and then for USPS to lose my card...... frustrating and scary. Thanks for your time and good luck with your situation xxx
