My partner's education was ruined because of little s***heads in his classes making his life hell and, in general, just making sure the teacher could never teach lessons. My partner ended up having to leave school before he did got High School Diploma and, although he regrets it so much, he knew he couldn't survive any longer in the school he went to. The teachers never did a THING against the bad students and because of that he feels like he is as thick as s*** because he never got a chance to get his HSD. I can't help but feel so sorry for him because the school I went to was amazing in comparison... I kinda dread the idea of having kids in the US after hearing all of these stories...

it's all a matter of how you treat the kids and what you allow them to do

I agree it's all the result of parenting, but at the same time if you put your foot down the kids wont like it but they will know you mean business

I had a 4th grader yesterday in the lunchroom call me on writing her down for misbehaviour in the lunchroom and actually ask me the question of whether her teacher told me to not like her because her teacher is against her....what bull...

I asked the whole class to tell me how old they are, and told them that I am tired of them acting like babies.... After they got back into class, first the kid in question was talked to by both the teacher and me together and the whole class got a speech on table manners and appropriate behaviour....

No delusions here, most of them thought we were two b**** idiots bossing them around, BUT they will still think twice before they start misbehaving and that's good enough for me....

Kids today will argue the s*** out of you if you let them, so you just don't let them.... I actually have a line that I'm getting to be known for : "We are NOT having a discussion, when an adult talks to you your answer is Yes Mam!, No Mam!"

Sad, but true that this is how you have to deal with 10 and 11 yo.

Naturalized! Yeah!

As I was growing up, I never fought or raised my voice towards my parents. I was the most mature (mentally) compared to everyone. Small comments was kept to myself. American culture taught kids to raise voices towards their parents.

You know, there's lots of reasons nowadays that kids are suffering from ADD, etc...Someone said about putting " your foot down on them (Figuratively Speaking). " This is a very strong method to enforce discipline on them, and places control back onto the parents.

My parents use militaristic style to enforce discipline on all my siblings. It worked. It also worked on them when they were little kids. I understand my culture. And, I also understand America culture as well as most democratic cultures. In America, we were taught that we fight for freedom. Little kids when they hear this they immediately take everything for granted. I was taught not to take everything for granted. I thought like an adult since elementary school. I was the quiet one (In high school, the teachers always say " stay away from the quiet one" because they're dangerous. I always think of myself as being dangerous. LOL, very funny.)

Low expectations, or no expectations or simply haven't a clue with parenting. Smacking either the children or the parents isn't going to raise their awareness or achieve goals though. There are a ton of ways of getting children to understand without violence but it does take time and patience.

There is also the reality that not everyone is created with equal learning aptitude. Some people really can't do some things and no amount of cajouling or persuasion is going to change that.

Well you pretty much need a combination of both. Discipline as well as some sort of expectations from your kids. You need a license, diploma, degree, certification etc for just about everything in life apart from being a parent.

What you are saying is all good and well from someone who does not have to deal with 25 of them for 7.5 hours, 5 days a week. How would you like it if people disrespected you 7.5 hours and day and your only option out was by quitting the industry?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I'm sticking to my ways of disciplining my children. It has been done the same way throughout the generation in the culture. So far, nobody died or went crazy, or even went to jail.

Yet apparently modern day, post 60's, parents know better than thousands of generations before them, as todays style of appeasement is the right thing to do.

I mean the positive results of appeasement speaks for itself. I will give you an example of it http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/s...est/6527625.stm

and you know where they get that from; anyone watch the Hannah montana's, Zac & Codys etc. These shows portray kids as being the head honcho of the house and make it out to be normal for them to disrespect adults.

Personally I would not have dared try to pull something like that off, at that age, as I know my 'parents' would have caned my ###. Then again I also had male principals which kept us in line.

Whereas kids now think they are untouchable and above the law.

Think??? They *ARE* untouchable and above the law. It's been that way for a number of years. Could this be why I've heard the "teacher shortage" verbiage for a while now...and could this be why so many first year (and beginning) teachers quit education and why some very good veteran teachers are hanging it up even when they have a lot of life left in them? Oh wait...that life is slowly sucked out of them from the amount of energy they pour into these kids, many who are like the ones mentioned in the first post. How sad for them too. I kinda know how they feel.
