A Spearsville High School teacher said Thursday an incident involving fifth-graders having sex in a classroom is one of many things wrong at the school.

First-year teacher Michael Walker said students at the kindergarten through 12th grade school are unruly, disrespectful — and rarely disciplined.

"They cuss at the teachers and throw things at them, and nothing is done," Walker said. "There was even one student who grabbed a teacher in the butt and nothing was done. The students run the school."

Unbelievable. I do not know how teachers do it in this country.

I was able to excel in school because of hardship, and punishment? That's about as bizarre a statement as I ever heard...I would not send any kid of mine to a school where physical punishment was incorporated into the teaching programme.

Clearly, there is a problem with some schools, however many schools have no discipline problems without the use of physical punishment (my 8 year old goes to such a school) so saying it's all as a result of not being able to resort to using physical punishment is obviously missing something.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

There's a problem? No, it's a matter of perspective. I grew up in an Asian culture. If I miss a day of school, I would get scolded, and punished. If I get grades that aren't good or didn't get an A, my parents would be embarrassed and they would address that issue on me by making me study harder by any means.

In school, I have found that many people who don't excel in school are those whose parents are easy on them. There is no problem in my statement. Yet, these are the parents who complained why their kids aren't doing well.

I'm 19 and it's only been 3yrs since I left school. I was well behaved because my parents brought me up to respect adults. We're not well off people, never have been, but there was always a level of respect in my household. My parents never raised a finger to me and I like to believe I've turned out pretty well :) I guess it's because my parents gave me a lot of their respect that I grew up giving them, and other people, the same amount I was given... I dunno.. I guess it's not 100% the parents fault when their kids step out of line, but they're the people that we need to point fingers at.

In school I daren't step out of line anyway... I had Nuns teaching me and my God they're the scariest teachers in the WORLD. Most of them would not allow you to utter a WORD in your lessons. God forbid if you so much as looked at the person next to you... You'd never get hit of course because it's illegal now, but the look a penguined Nun can give you when they're not happy with your behaviour.. My God it'd stop a nuclear warhead in it's tracks...

I kinda know the feelings. The Nuns are similar to my parents. I fear them that whenever they want to talk to me, I know there may be a problem. I tried to always not to get into trouble.

For example, coming home from school and finding them staring at me almost felt like they are ready to kill me.

In every story, there comes a dangerous chapter when one must re visit the scene of the primal crime. Pay your respects to the past without becoming posessed by it.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Another growing problem at schools now, is not even being able to lay a hand on a student to remove them from the classroom if they are being disruptive. Where I'm living they still practice physical punishment, and I don't really agree with that, but I see nothing wrong with physically removing a child from the classroom or physically setting a child in a corner to discipline them. You can tell a child to go sit in a corner all you want, but if they are bullheaded and not going to do it, and you can't physically do anything, then it's almost pointless.

I also see a big problem with the cutting off funding for physical education programs, kids have a lot of energy and are fed a lot of sugar by school lunch programs and parents, if they don't have the means to wear off this extra energy, they are going to have behavior problems in the classroom. I remember not being able to sit still right before recess because I couldn't wait to get outside and run around. Physical education also reduces the growing problems of childhood obesity and diabetes. Something just has to be done with the US educational system and school discipline, these things will only get worse before they get better.

It was in that room that two students had sex on the floor while two others fondled each other, he said.

"There were about 15 kids in that class," Walker said. "I can't believe they did it right in front of everyone."

The students were alone for about 30 minutes before a teacher walked into the room, Walker said. By then, the students had cleaned up blood that was on the floor, possibly from a girl's menstrual period.

"The boy who had sex had gone down to the office and changed his pants and everything," Walker said. "It wasn't just a few minutes; it was an elaborately planned-out thing."

Both outrageous and saddening just palin Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!! :o

In school, I have found that many people who don't excel in school are those whose parents are easy on them

There is simply no correlation between how parents punish a child and their degree of success in school. It just doesn't make sense to me to try to teach via scare tactics or bullying.

The onus is on parents to teach their child to be respectful in all kinds of environments. This can be done without ever resorting to physical punishment.

Sadly, the parents of these kids are simply not teaching their children to value either themselves or anyone around them. Starting to thrash them on top of this is not going to make some fundamentall change, it would simply move the problem to another arena. However, we've had this argument before and some people simply believe a short sharp shock is the answer to everything.

Teaching discipline, values, self worth, all the tools that a child needs, is hard work. I guess slapping them is the easy option.

The sad thing is, I'm disturbed, but not surprised. Things like this go on all the time in inner-city schools, and the teachers have no authority to do anything about it. I know of 5 people, personally, who went into teaching and quit after a couple of years because of all the b.s. that goes on in the school system.

I myself thought about going into teaching, and took Teacher Cadets when I was in high school (which is a program that gives you real teaching experience for college credit). I had also started working at a daycare at the same time. Between the student teaching, and my experience at the daycare, I saw how little power teachers actually have. What can you do? Tell the students you're sending them to the principal? Most just don't care. Their moms will come pick them up, have a word with the principal, and blame it on someone else. One little girl (an 8 year old) had been kicked out of 3 different daycare programs. The parents just kept sending her to a new one each time, and nothing changed.

I really have to hand it to teachers who are able to handle working in today's schools....

Well said. Teachers have their hands tied behind their backs while kids do as they please. That is on top of so many dumb ### parents who think public education is the same as private education, where they get to call the shots. I am sick to death of hearing teachers mention how the admin and principals turn a blind eye and 'force' them to turn a blind eye, just so their 'stats' look good.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I'm a middle school teacher so I could go on and on and on....

In one day we found 2 couples under the portables at my school - a heterosexual couple and a homosexual couple. The boys are only in 6th grade. It's very sad.

What I have a problem with is that there are students who are labeled special ed(ucation) and because of this never really get into trouble. They are only allowed so many out-of-school suspensions. And believe me, they know this. So they keep it up...again and again and again.

It's really sad.

As teachers we're expected to work miracles in 7 3/4 hours M-F, 10 months a year. But then the kids go home to parents who are not there, don't care, can't control them (and look to the school for help), or are too mean. I wish there was a solution....

We can only do our best - and kill ourselves working for that in the meantime.

I am NOT religious, but hey, spare the rod...spoil the child.
