Social Security Number with a K1

Hi,

I just wanted to double-check something. I have arrived on my K1 visa (17th January, POE Philadelphia International Airport - couldn't have been smoother!)

I have seen the guide on this website that suggests I should wait 2 weeks to make sure I am on the 'SAVE-ASVI' system. What I am less sure about is the possibility of applying for the SSN in advance of getting my I-485 (I will apply for my I-765 at the same time). I went to the Social Security website and it says:

"If you do not have permission to work: Lawfully admitted noncitizens can get many benefits and services without a Social Security number. You do not need a number to conduct business with a bank, register for school, apply for educational tests, obtain private health insurance, apply for school lunch programs or apply for subsidized housing. You cannot get a Social Security number for the sole purpose of obtaining a driver's license."

My K1 allows me to apply for a permission to work but I understood that it was not in itself a permission to work. So the Social Security Administration website appears to be saying I can't apply for one until I get my I-765. The advice on this site points to being able to apply for a SSN once the 2 week window has passed and in any event no later than 14 days prior to my I-94 expiring (this will be 16th April, almost 2 months after the wedding).

Am I being over-cautious about this? Have others arriving on a K1 been able to get their SSN in advance of receiving I-765 authorization?

Thanks

Adam

Once you obtain your EAD, you can work, so you wouldn't get the SSN solely for drivers' licence purposes. And it does make applying for a DL soooo much easier. So yes, I'd recommend to go get it ASAP, especially now that you still have time to sit in waiting rooms for a long time...
