No because the three years prior were not. It does not show a stable income to have one year above the poverty line for a business in operation for 17 years. He needs to prove stable income and if he cannot he will require a joint sponsor, unfortunately. You do not have to wait until April to file your taxes by the way because you submitted your application in 2016 your 2015 taxes are the required initial evidence. You just want to use your current income as proof that you meet the requirements now, because you do not have pay stubs etc. There is no way to avoid a joint sponsor for you unless there is a significant income change though in my honest opinion.

If your 2016 AGI on the taxes is above the poverty line then you're fine but make sure to do the taxes before the RFE is due or else it won't matter.

Yeah sadly, even if those met it, it won't matter if the most recent tax return doesn't meet it. The difference between say a regular job and a self employed job, is when a regular guy shows his paystubs, 99% of the time none of that money is going to go to business expenses, but when you're self employed you share your personal money with the companys money because you ARE the company. So when they look at proof of what you make as self employed, it's not 100% correct because they can't tell which money is his and which isn't. They do have proof that his take home can be significantly less than his actual income due to business expenses, which can hurt if they think that even now regardless of paystubs his take home is very little.

If we use assets to back it up,how do we know that our assets are enough?we dont have big amount of money in the bank but we have properties like our house and truck

Assets are suppose to be 3 times the amount of income you're MISSING from the poverty line. So if you took your 2015 tax return and it showed your AGI was 4500 and you need 20025, then difference that you're missing is 15525, and you need three times that amount, so you would need to show you have 46,575 in assets. These assets have to be cash or liquifiable and readily available to turn into cash.

So:

(Poverty Line Income) MINUS (ACTUAL AGI INCOME) = NEEDED ASSET BASE AMOUNT

(Needed asset base amount) TIMES 3 = ACTUAL AMOUNT OF ASSETS NEEDED

In your case it looks like this:

20,025 - 4,500 = 15,525

15,525 * 3 = 46,575

It's times 3 for immediate family member, it's times 5 for anyone else.

You can not use your only house or your only car, you can use a house and a car but only if they aren't your main house or main car as they consider it as causing a hardship on yourself.

Actually AFAIK the rules have changed and you can use equity in your main residence as proof of assets. Double-check this though as I'm not 100% sure.

It'd obviously be better if it was paid for in full because then the value of the property would equal your equity. With a mortgage, the equity (the part that you can use as assets) is the value of the property minus the amount owed on the mortgage.
