I-129f question 34.a

Hi, I've been looking for an answer to this and I keep seeing conflicting opinions, I was hoping I could get some clarification.

On 34.a., are they looking for a description of your meeting in the last two years, or are they looking for a description of how you met for the first time? (for us that is more than two years ago)

Also, if it is for the first time we met, is evidence of this meeting required or expected? All we have are passport stamps and a couple of bank statements that put us in the same place at the same time. (We have much more evidence for later meetings)

Thanks,

Matt

Primarily they are wanting a brief explanation of how, when, where you physically met.

I think most people give about a 5-8 sentence explanation about how they met originally (online, visiting, school, ect...) and then explain when, where, and all about when they met in person.

Does not have to be super in depth.

I wrote about how we met, where, and mentioned how long we spoke before we became a couple, along with meeting for the first time in person. After that, I added bullet points for each visit we had (at the time I filed we had met up 5 times in the past two years) so I had 5 bullet points with the dates we were together bolded, explaining who visited who and what visit # it was for us. Very brief but enough info so when the reviewing officer looked at our passport stamps, photos, and other evidence in the packet, it would coincide with the dates from that attachment :) Mine was about a page, but it's all about how much you are comfortable sending- more or less will get the job done.

You also only need to provide evidence later on in your packet btw, where you'll get to include photos, boarding passes, passport stamps, trip itineraries, etc. for any trips you've had together, so you won't need it for the 34a attachment!

Good luck!

EDIT: Wanted to add in- USCIS just wants to make sure that you've met in person at least once within the past two years when you file. If you met a year ago or 10 years ago it won't make a difference. Talking about the first time you met even if it was 2+ years ago is fine, so long as you can prove with additional evidence later in the packet that you've been together in person at least once within these past 2 years :)

Matt in the lines provided on question 34a they are looking for a very brief description of how you met.  Just a few sentences is adequate in that section. You may use a sheet of paper to elaborate and explain everything if you wish too and you still have to give them evidence that you have met in person within 2 years of the filing of the application, so the fact that you don't have a lot of actual paper evidence from the very first meeting more than 2 years ago is OK, they want to see the actual evidence of your most recent meeting in person, like photos together, proof that you where with your Fiance in person.

I wasn't sure of the same thing, so in my case I said we had first met online on X website and that in X date I came to meet him in person and that since then, we had seen each other 2 more times in my home country. It was just barely longer than the space available, so we attached a supplement page that had 3 lines in total. It really doesn't have to be long, since you'll have to provide evidence later on anyway.

In your case I'd say something like "We met the first time more than two years ago in this way, blahblah and in the past two years I've gone to visit her on this dates, or she has come to visit me on this dates..."

For my answer to question 34.A I wrote "see attached statement" in the space provided on the I-129F, and my statement was two and a half pages long. I wrote about how we met, all of our visits prior to applying for our K-1, getting engaged, and how we had visits already planned for the future up until the K-1 was issued. When I was choosing evidence of our relationship, I included all of the evidence that matched with the story. For example, I mentioned going on vacation to a beach in the States and playing rooftop mini-putt, I attached a photo we took at the mini-putt course and the scorecard from our game; I mentioned going out for dinner and down to the Falls at Niagara Falls on NYE where we got engaged and attached our dinner reservation, hotel reservation, tickets from the attractions we visited while there, and a photo of us by the Falls after getting engaged. With that being said, I chose the best evidence and not all of it, and I didn't include all of the sappy details in my statement but kept it factual! Good luck!!

We just answered the question:

We met at..... on........

And that was for the last 2 years portion. We first met each other in the 90's (ouch)

That was it.
