Name automatically changed?

I honestly though that you must file some kind of paper work to have your spouses name changed??

Well apparently other Filipina's who married foreigners are telling my wife that her name is automatically changed. 

And that all we need to do is go to the Social security office with valid proof of marriage.  

 

Is this information true?  And by name change, I mean the last name of course. 

My wife doesn't have green card yet and we haven't yet filed because I wanted to wait for my 

new W-2 which shows a larger income amount than last years.

It's not "automatically" changed, she still needs to choose to change it. However the choice is made by simply starting to use the married last name on official documents and changing bank accounts, SSN etc. The marriage certificate is the "proof of name change document" that she'll need to prove why she is changing at those different places. The SSO likely will not change the SSC one until she has her EAD though. They need to verify the name against immigration and it's not registered there until the EAD is registered.

I will change her SSN once we have EAD.  

The only thing we share at this moment is my credit card. I was given an American Express card and they suggested I add her to my account. 

So they sent me a card for her and said she will earn a credit score from it. She has been an authorize user for 4 months.  Last week she got a letter in the mail from another credit card company saying she is pre-approved for a capital one. So I guess she really is earning credit from it.
