Hi

I'm waiting for my visa, CR1. I'll be importing my car, Nissan versa 2009, to Florida. I have my compliance letter from Nissan. When I'll get to Florida, I'll conform my car to a register car vehicule garage to make it conform to FL standards.

I would like to know if it could be a problem for me to resell my car in Florida in 1-2 years because it's a Canadian car. The distance is in KM and not in milleage. Also, is there any other reasons why it might be a problem to sell it in FL.

Could I resell it to a car dealer without any problems? or I'm better to sell it in Canada before I Ieave.

I just want to make the right decision before I leave.

Thanks for your help.

When I moved to Florida, I sold my Canadian Ford Ranger to the Mitsubishi dealership in Deland within the first month of being here.

I did not make any changes to the truck.  The dealership did say that they would have to get the dash converted, but I didn't have to do anything other than sign over the title and accept a cashiers chq for it :)

Good luck!

22 Jan 2013 -- packageSent
31 Jan 2013 -- NOA1 from NBC

6 Mar 2013 -- I130 transferred to Orlando local field office (which started the whole nightmare)

Mar 2013 to October 2013 no one would tell us where our case was or what was happening. I suspected the whole time it was just sitting in a corner somewhere in the Orlando field office. I was pretty much right.

October 2013 - get congressman involved. Congressman asks USCIS repeatedly about our case but they won't even tell them anything.

31 Jan 2014- finally get NOA2!!!! (we think the nightmare is over!)

NVC

Our case was not sent from the Orlando field office as it should have been. The nightmare continues. We kept calling NVC and asking if they received our case, and they always said "NO" and that we had to wait 90 business days for it to be received. We called USCIS during this time and they kept telling us it had been sent. After the 90 days of agonizing frustration, NVC then started telling us we had to wait 120 business days. I got our congressman involved again, and they told the congressman it was sitting at the Orlando office this whole time (just as I thought it was!).

22 Apr 2014 -- NVC received
16 May 2014 -- NVC case number assigned
24 May 2014 -- AoS and IV bills paid

28 May 2014 -- Sent AoS and IV Packages

6 June 2014 -- documents scanned

18 July 2014 -- false checklist from NVC

21 July 2014 -- Case complete

28 July 2014 -- receive case complete email from NV

30 July 2014 -- interview booked! September 11 here I come!

04 Sept 2014 -- Medical
11 Sept 2014 -- Interview - APPROVED!!!!
15 Sept 2014 -- Package arrived at Loomis location!!!

Great! Do the price that they offer you for your car was decent ? or the gave you a very low price because they need to convert the dash ?

I got a very respectable price for my truck... Waaaaay more than I would have gotten in Canada.  Granted, my truck was a rare model for this area.

I actually went onto auto trader here in the US, and they have a special feature on there about selling your vehicle to a dealership.  You put in all the info on your vehicle, and then it comes back to you with a quote.  You print that out and take it to a dealership they specify, and then you get that for your vehicle.  It was very easy, and waaay less stressful then trying to sell it privately.

Also, I think its only a hundred dollars or so for a dealer to convert the car... So not a big factor.

Thanks for the info. I also looked for the price they would give me in FL and seems like higher than what I would have in FL. Also, with the money exchange, it might worth it to FL if they give me a better price for it.

I'll give a try for sure with auto trader website ;) Thanks again

If the CBP agent allows the import at the boarder, hands you back your stamped paperwork, you have everything you need to sell your car in the US.  Funny enough there are lots of ex-pats or Canadians with vacation homes in the US who have no problem purchasing a car with metric measurements. :) good luck.

I sold my car before I moved. I didn't want to have issues selling it down here and wanted the money for the uhaul.  I doubt I could have sold it for more down here.

Your car has to be compliant before you can even import.

We were looking at trucks to buy recently and I completely shied away from a Canadian made F-150.  Since cars can be stolen and taken down here, or haven't had the dashes changed over etc... I just didn't want the issues that may arise.  And I'm Canadian.  LOL  The truck was selling for much less (5kish) than similar US made models were.  We ended up with a truck with about 10k more in miles, but had way more options for only 2k more.

No issues... myself and my family have imported / sold cars both ways. As long as the car is compliant and the paperwork is done correctly it's not a big deal.

Depending on the make/model a Canadian version of a US vehicle will fetch a similar price if its a very desirable vehicle.

Only case I had an issue was with CarMax. CarMax is a used car chain in the US and they are known as a place to go to sell your car for cash without having to buy another car. They sometimes won't take a vehicle registered in Canada, it varies.

Never had a problem at other dealerships.

Thanks. Do you know if the compliance letter have an expiration date ?It's been more than 1 year that I had it. Do you think I'll need a new one ?

I keep a copy on file [one of my cars is a collector car that just crossed the 25 year old threshold], but once it's registered in the US with plates with a state DMV you shouldn't need a compliance letter anymore legally speaking.

The letter has to be relatively current for importation purposes but once processed by CBP and the state level DMV you are fine.

But my compliance letter date from November 2015. Do you think I'll need another one if I'll pass the customs to import it in March 2017 ?
