When I went to Afghanistan this past summer I realized how spoiled I was.

They only get water about once a week so when it comes they fill up EVERYTHING they have with enough to last them a week or more.

The water is ice cold so you have to warm it up to wash yourself.

There is an outhouse that is used by neighbors and the hole is big enough so you can guess what the people before you had to eat...lol...

If you need to iron anything, there is no electricity so you have to heat the iron on a gas thing (I cant even remeber the name) but it was lit with a match

There are no cellphones and I LOVVEDDD not having to use mine...in the states I freak out when I forget it at home

Oh and having your period there is a #######...I forgot to take pads so I had to use there form of padding and it was mad crazy...

The crazy thing is that I got used to it in no time and I really really didn't want to leave...

Timeline

-We have a cellphone each but no house line... (I resisted but DH told me the cells were cheaper and more convenient and he's right.) But my cellphone is the most basic model I could get - it's JUST a phone, not a photo-taking email-fetching computer-substitute.

-We have cable TV but only because DH insisted that he couldn't live without it. I don't watch it much. We just got a DVR box and it's wonderful! Cable internet came with the package and it's good too.

- I have a portable CD player, not an ipod. And I have a small stereo in my craftroom that plays MP3s instead of using the computer for music.

- My computer has bells and whistles but only because DH just bought it! My old system didn't even have speakers connected. I have yet to use any of the built-in-features and probably won't, except for the built-in cardreader, which is very handy for digital photos.

- DH has a laptop but only because it's company issue...

- no lawnmower because no lawn, but if we had one it would be the most basic model of electric mower I could find because I'm allergic to petrol fumes. Electric mowers are WONDERFUL because they're light and quiet and they don't make any fumes. You just need a very long extension cord and an outside powerpoint...

- our microwave is used for reheating leftovers, thawing frozen foods and nuking potatoes. Fully microwaved meat is HORRIBLE.

In short, I like technology that makes life easier, but I'm willing to wait until other people have got the bugs out and the price has come down to a reasonable level.
