How Unique Am I in my resistance to conform to latest technology and modern amenities?

I do not own a Cell Phone.

I do not have cable TV, but use a thing called an Antenna to receive free TV channels.

I have a push mower instead of a riding lawn mower or lawn tractor.

I have a microwave oven but its used to make popcorn only.

I do not have garbage service--instead I tote my trash to the dump or to my Sister's house.

I still have a walkman and discman players---no IPODs or MP3 what-have-yous.

My TV is only 32 inches and is a standard CRT type tube.

No icemaker in my frig.

I do have DSL service, but I dummied it down to the cheapest and slowest DSL you can buy.

My answering machine uses the default recording that came with the phone.

I still have a plain old "stereo" and have resisted getting a Dolby 5 point whatever or so surround system.

I do not own any mechanical massage devices.

Fung Shui might as well be the Combo Number 3 at the Peking Cafe, cause I not implemented nor attempted to adhere or learn anything about its principles or discipline.

I have basic shower heads that came with the shower/tubs, no special massage or water jets.

Though I enjoy my DVD player daily--I watch movies on VHS once a month.

Anyway who else has resisted new "improvements" in technology?

We dont have a cell phone

We dont have Cable, the tv is so old that we can only get ABC and NBC, the other free channels can't be tuned in even with rabbit ears.

We have a push mower too.

No MP3 but do have a minidisc

No icemaker and only got a stove last September

56K dial up modem

No answering machine

No stereo, just a record player

But we did get a DVD player for Christmas

This is not resistance to technology, this is being poor and having $15,000 worth of surgical expenses in the past 6 months :(

When we go back to England in April and stay with my Mum and Dad it will be like living in a palace!!!....I cant wait :)

I'm right there with you Artegal, except for the mower. I do have a rinding mower. I don't need a cell phone. There is nobody I need to talk to that bad. I do have trash service but basically the same on all others. It's shocking to some people when they find out you don't have cable or sattlelight tv.

My TV still works from the 80's . I bought a used flat screen last year from a friend and it died, so it's back to the old TV with the dial and no remote.

Things were built to last back then.

Also no cable, we can get enough TV channels here in Tucson to not have cable. If I had cable I'd be watching old sit coms like Gilligan's Island and MASH all day.

I don't have an I POD since Cd's are fine with me, and I still have dial up internet, although I think I would like high speed internet just don't have the extra bucks for it.

I have a cell phone although it's considered out of date, but if I can receive and make calls in an emergency what else do I need.

Allright, I think I can compete:

1) I caved in on that one - but I use less 15 minutes a month - my wife uses the remainder of "our" minutes

2) Ditto

3) Don't have one at all, but the last I had was a push mower

4) My microwave was a gift and goes unemployed most of the time

5) I do have this luxury

6) I don't even have a disc man, my last walkman I had 20 years ago

7) Try 27" old school TV - but it has color already. ;)

8) Ditto

9) I have whetever the phone company had - and use my old PC which slows things down anyways

10) Yep.

11) My stereo just had it's 10th anniversary - still working

12)

13) I don't even know what you're talking about. :P

14) Same here.

15) I still have more VHS than DVD's...

How'd I do?

It's conversations like this that remind me where I am from. I lived for two years with no electricity, no running water, no car, no phone, no post office, a piece of foam on all too noticable wooden boards, cooked with a coal pot, washed clothes by hand, read by candle light or kerosine lamp, and walked or rode my bicycle to wherever I needed to go. I had a kvip - a toilet in the form of a hole in the ground which I shared with every insect you could think of and dodged bats to get to at night. My house was luckily cement, but mosquitos, rats, scorpions, toads, etc. still found their way into my house (the only reason I kept the bed instead of just moving to the floor). My husband lived his entire life with less than what I had.

As for what we have here, minus the cell phones that we use, everything in my house is hand-me-downs from my parents from about 10 years ago when I left for college.

However, in my mind I still had it better than denali walking to the outhouse in Alaska! I can't imagine running outside with it being below freezing. The cold and I don't mix very well.

I love technology, but only if it actually improves my life. I'd have more if I could afford it, but saying that, here's how I compare to your list.

I bought cell phones for my whole family when I needed to keep track of them in their after school activities. Now that they're out of the house, I use my cell only to text message Fely in the Philippines. I hate when someone calls me on my cell phone.

Do not have cable, isn't available here. I'd have it if I could, as I only receive 2 maybe 3 stations by antenna and those not very well.

My push mower is broken, I have a sickle bar mower, it's broken too. The weeds are growing fast, what will I do?

My microwave is for warming leftovers only, I hate food cooked that way. I credit the microwave with causing the quality of frozen pizza and tv dinners to suffer, since they somehow changed the formula so that they could be microwaved as well as baked.

Garbage serviice is not available to me here, so hi ho hi ho it's to the dump I go.

iPod or MP3 player, no I don't have one, due to the cost. But, I've listened to MP3's from my computer with headphones, and they sound terrible. By speaker they sound fine. The processing required for an MP3 degrades it's quality, and is very obvious by headphone. So, I'm not sure I'd actually like to use an iPod. Still want one though.

My TV is 20" and sound quality is bad. I'd love a new 42" LCD TV, but the reception is so bad, what's the point?

The icemaker in my fridge is broken.

DSL also is not available here, and my dialup is 28K on a good day. I hate it.

My stereo is 20 years old, does everything I need it to do.

My mom gave me a foot massager for Christmas, but I have not yet used it. I prefer the living kind.

Ditto on the Fung Shui and the shower heads. Actually I prefer a bath tub.

Don't own a DVD player, except what's in my computer. This may change soon, I think a friend is giving me one. I do own a handful of DVDs.
