Exactly, if you can't stand up for yourself and fill a form the way you want... Going to be a joyful work place for sure.

haha then i wish i was a fly on the wall when you refuse to give HR your GC for photo copy because as a USC who has worked for over 20 years, every single employer has asked me to produce my SSN card, drivers license so they can copy it and even if the law dictates that you dont have too, its an expectation that you will provide it so they can copy it along with your SSN. I have worked for the following employers among others:

  • US Marine Corp- they asked for real documents to be handed over - Believe me whether you refuse or not - either you provide it here or you don't get in but that is another story LOL
  • UPS - they asked for real documents to be handed over
  • Dept of Homeland Security - Same as Marine Corp
  • Various IT companies - All demanded for photo copy.

Yes you are required to present documents proving identity and work authorization. The point is you are allowed to choose which - the employer can't for example tell you to show your green card if you wish to present your passport with i551 stamp. ..

Here are the list A, B and C docs that can be shown.

Could you shed some light on what happens with those numbers, from HR point of view? Who has access to these numbers? (concerns about identity theft, etc...)

If it's a "proper" company, the info stays with HR. When HR prints out your job application to give to the hiring manager, personal information such as SSN, A-number, year of birth etc is blacked out.
