oh! I am saving up prawn shells (bought 2 lbs of it the other day) to make prawn mee. I found the recipe here. http://www.rasamalaysia.com/

Ephesia, have you bought things from primataste.com? I was wondering if the shipping is going to be expensive, hence, I thought of trying to find stuffs locally here (since it'll most probably be cheaper).

I am now contemplating getting indomee from http://www.mytasteofasia.com/index.php. However, I haven't developed the craving yet that I'll pay those prices!

I am still in "sticker shock" and can't stop converting the prices to Ringgit.

Off to work now!

Wow, thanks for that website for Indomie. I miss Indomie too !!! And thanks for the recipe for prawn mee! I have to save up prawn shells too, I guess. Seafood is VERY expensive in Indy because we're not near any significant body of water, so most of our seafood is imported.

I was in sticker shock during my first visit here too, Snow. I don't convert anymore, but I still get uncomfortable with how expensive eating out can be here. My US friends were shocked when I told them that for US$2.00 I could walk across the street from my flat in Singapore, buy a box of food, a cold drink, and a piece of fruit. LOL. Hurray for kopi-tiam !!!!!!!!!

I tried ordering from Prima Taste once. Then they required me to call Singapore to confirm the order. I thought that was a bit spastic. So I didn't bother. If you want to have a general idea of how much shipping will cost: my regular order from Asian Home Gourmet costs about US$16.00 to ship via UPS. That's not too horrible because I usually order a lot.

Oh no, now I want a bowl of mee pok dry. LOL.

Apa khabar, kokorusan? Hi! Your husband's quote made me laugh. That is so cute! My hubby can say "Hi, ni hao!" so well he sounds totally Chinese. In fact, he said it to my brother on the phone once, and my brother was shocked. lol. Hubby can also say the usual things like Wo Ai Ni. I think that's about it. LOL.

So ...

Since all the food I had craved earlier is not available here, I decided to have a big juicy steak for dinner with my hubby. Mmm mmm mmm!

Hello Ephesia or rather Elen and hello to you too Kokorusan....

Wow... it seems that we can open up a "Kopi Tiam" cafe in here and hang out and talk about food  Everytime you guys talk about food, it makes my mouth waters.... Anyway, I have a lot of Indo mie stock up in my pantry with different flavours. My hubby and step kids seem to like them too. They said it taste a whole lot better than Ramen noodles... duh!!!

Hey guys, you know what I really crave for right now are roti canai and teh tarik. I couldn't seem to find any Indian or "mamak" restaurant here. Hey Kokorusan, your nickname seems to sound like my native language (Kadazan from Sabah). Anyway, are you originally from KL? I have been to KL so many times... I used to work for UMW Toyota for 14 years. I have a sister who lives in Cheras with her family. She's been living there for like 20 years.

It's so nice to read all your posts guys.... keep them coming. Take care.

If we open a kopi tiam in the US, I want to sell mee pok, prawn mee, and chicken rice!

This thread is becoming bad for my tummy. I want to eat everything mentioned. LOL.

Yeah, no chance of finding roti canai and teh tarik here, Dora. I think we can make our own teh tarik, though. The Asian stores in Indy sell condensed milk. We can pretend to be skilled mamaks and pull the teh.

Oh, we should also make our own ice kachang !!!!!!!!!!

OK, back to work. Another busy day. Have a good day, guys! :)

Actually, alot of asian stores sell the roti canai/prata frozen. HEEHEE. that's how I get my fix. :) And i ordered some stuff from the mytasteofasia store a few mths ago. Their ikan billis sambal was like omg, nasi lemak chilli!!! Now i just make coconut rice + fry an egg + slice some cucumbers then add that chilli sauce = instant nasi lemak. haha. (desperation? ;) )

There's a malaysian restaurant not far from me also, about 15 mins drive. Malay satay hut- has a few branches in the NW. Their food is okay la... but think cooking it is a bit more authentic/nicer.

P.S. Dora, added you to msn! :)

For mee pok, make your own noodles from scratch. I know this is a recipe for pasta (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Egg-Noodles/Detail.aspx) but it came out tasting like mee pok, if you add your own dark soy sauce, premium light soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic oil.

Oh! I found some really good sambal belacan from a small Ranch 99 in Van Nuys, CA (and it's the smallest Ranch, apparently). It's called Sambal Terasi from Kokita brand and manufactured by Ika Foods, Bandung, Indonesia. I used it to fry meehoon last night and it turned out pretty good!

For tau foo fa, I go to Chinese restaurants for dimsum and they usually have it. Found one really good in Cupertino, Northern California in a restaurant called Pan Tao. The ones in Ranch 99 taste horrid...

Time for bed! Good night!

Hi snow, Dora, Eph and Jas,

Wow!! i'm getting ALL sorts of cooking tips for when i get to the US!..lol.. guess i 'm the only one at the moment who can relish the teh tarik and roti canai's at the mamak stores here :) ..so this means i should eat until my heart's content huh? i could ship some over if anyone is interested??..heh heh heh..

Snow , did you also apply for a K3? Anyone know how long it took from the NOA1 of the I-129 K3 to finally materialize into the call from the US embassy in KL? I have the NOA1 already and my police cert is valid until october. Do you think i will get a call from the embassy by then?ugh, this waiting is terrible!

Dora, added you to MSN :)

5 more days before i see my hubby!! :D

waitinginME, yes eat till you drop before you come here. I think I ate laksa three times in my last week in Singapore, and my 'last supper' before my flight out at 6am was prawn mee soup. LOL.

I also want to add that mytasteofAsia is an evil, evil website. I ordered a bunch of stuff on Sun night. I caved into temptation and ordered the Indomie. How can resist?!

Our friends took us to the authentic Thai restaurant for lunch yesterday. OMG I was so happy. Real tom yum soup! Real pineapple fried rice served in a real pineapple shell! Real green curry that was so creamy because of wonderful coconut milk! Real lychee ice cream! And real Thai staff who smiled and smiled so warmly each time they visited our table! I ate so much that I didn't need to eat anything for dinner. Sooooooooooo happy!

Hi all:)

Just checked the board to see how everyone is doing:) Am in the US on holiday (finally!) visitng hubby:) I got 2 touches from USCIS on the 26th and 27th YAY!

Otherwise spending a lot of time watching Home decorating Tv and learning/ adjusting to trying to drive on the right side of the road. hehhehheh:)I think he wants to block that DIY channel cos that list of 'what to makes' is becoming longer and loonger. Plus i come up with recycling projects almost everytime he comes home!! :P Hey ,that makes for excitment Right???!!

Eph/Dora,i finally found a small Asian grocers in Portland. Bolehlah:) They had the black sambal paste that we use to make rojak and add to Asam Laksa:) and we tried 2 paus ( hubby calls them powpows..lol..) that the owner ships in from boston on sunday mornings.Tasted ok but i will definately put bamboo steamer on my list of items to ship from Malaysia. I think I can make fresh powpows when i am here!! Easy PEasy since that shop has the char siewsauce mix!

Ok speak to you gals later :)
