Not really... I could just as well be denied residency and sent home. Ppl that travel temporarily don't report it. If I had done CR-1 and had GC right away I would have sent it. As of now I'm stuck in an inbetween status everywhere.

Yes they do. If you know you are going to be away from Sweden for 1 year or more you have to let the know. Even people who study here or come here as Au Pairs need to do it.

Thanks for the replies. I sent in my "move notice" to the tax office about a week before I moved to the US, got a confirmation to the US address that they have removed me from folkbokföringen or whatever the register is called, so all that is done. It took forever to get the marriage certificate but once we finally got it I sent a copy of that, an application for name change and a letter stating that I wanted my marriage to be registered in Sweden, to Skatteverket.  I logged in on Skatteverket just before new years and noticed they have changed my name and my civil status, but I haven't received a physical confirmation, is that a problem you think?

Once I saw the changes were made I scheduled an appointment for passport renewal here in San Diego, appointment is in February. I hope there won't be any issues with my new name or so, my new info is on Skatteverket when I log in, I just haven't got the conformation.. :-/ I have ordered two personbevis as well, they will show my new name and civil status, right?

Even if you have to pay for the passport four times over in Sweden it's still going to be cheaper than paying ONE time here, Maria :D

I don't think the lack of conformation is a problem at all. That it's registered is what matters. :)

Personbevisen borde visa allt :)

Okay good to have the passport renewal appointment then as I've already changed everything else to my new name, only the passport left really. Thank you, Maria.

I don't remember the exact cost of a passport in Sweden but I think it's around 300-350kr? Here I have to pay $175 (!) plus another $10 to get a certified bank check as the consulate for some reason didn't want regular checks or money orders.. Grr...

WHAT!? $175!? Wow, I am so glad I had to get a new one in Sweden... And I was mad for having to pay around 600 SEK for my two passports lol

Btw, does anyone know when the passport is invalid when you change name? Does it only get invalid once you change your name with Skatteverket, or is it invalid already the same day you get married/change name here in the US?

You can use your passport as long as the ticket is in the same name... just bring marriage certificate/immigration document  (ead/ap or gc) and marriage certificate for re-entry.

Unless the name change ofc :)

No. This works to get back into the US or before your name has changed in Sweden. But as a Swedish citizen your passport is invalid if your name as married (registered in Sweden) does not match your passport.

Most expensive passport I've ever had, that's for sure! :D I'm pretty sure I never have to pay that much for a passport again though. The American passport will cost about $150 I think, but it's valid for 10 years.

Yeah it's insane that it costs that much but I guess it's because of the hassle of sending personal sensitive stuff across the pond. Or at least I am hoping that's why because taking that much just for some "administrative processing"  is just ridiculous.

Hey Group!

My wife and I are stuck in the NVC review stage of our IR1 visa process, hopefully soon moving from Sweden to the US. I am the beneficiary.

We have been waiting almost 10 weeks getting our AOS and IV package reviewed and approved.

Finally, after many phone calls we managed to get some feedback from NVC and have been told that we got 2 errors in our AOS package.

  1. We did not send in the long version of the personbevis as my birth certificate. The personbevis did not state my parents. I accidentally mixed up the marriage certificate with the long version of the personbevis :(  Will send in the correct one (The one I got in hand is in English.)
  2. The beneficiary's military record is in English language. - I specifically ordered this certificate for US visa purpose. It was sent to be in English language. Signed and with stamp. Do this certificate also need to be in Swedish language?

We got this info from a operator, not a supervisor. So don't know how accurate the info is yet.

The operator also told me the "Extract of the population register" / Personbevis also should be in Swedish language?

I did send in the incorrect version of the personbevis I get that... But must these documents really be in Swedish language if officially stamped and signed?

I don't get it, why the English version should be invalid?

When speaking to Rekryteringsmyndigheten about getting another certificate for my military service in Swedish, they sounded surprised and have never experienced this request when dealing with US visa. They said they will try to help me out though.

Can anyone with experience of this NVC stage tell me if English version of both these certificates have passed their approval?

/Gustaf

I'm doing K1 but I have experience in dealing with Skatteverket and the military.

Everything needs to be in English both when dealing with NVC and the embassy. Skatteverket does not always know what they are doing and I recommend actually going to the office and don't walk out until you have the right papers. It needs to be the long one with both parents on them and it needs to be in English.

Same with the military records, they need to be in English. You are sending papers to Americans who doesn't know Swedish.

So I did get a confirmation via regular mail that Skatteverket has changed my name and registered my marriage, that's a relief even if not needed. I also ordered a new personbevis which I got in the mail today. It has all my new info on it, showing that I no longer live in Sweden, what date I moved, what date I got married and so on. I will bring that to my passport appointment and also my Swedish driver's license since my passport has already expired. So I'm more or less good to go!

Hej everyone,

First off, wanted to say thank you to Suss&Camm for the advice regarding my RFE post on the previous Scandinavians thread! My RFE was indeed a problem with the personbevis that others had posted about, so I got a letter from the consulate explaining that the extract of the population register is indeed the swedish marriage certificate as you suggested! Sent the RFE reply in now, fingers crossed!

I have another question. Regarding the medical exam in Sweden, when can this be scheduled? Is it as soon as a number is assigned by the NVC or does it have to be when the embassy has made the interview date? Its a little unclear from what I've read online.

Well, let's hope that makes them happy :)

If you using going to Sibyllekliniken they want your STK-number  (from NVC) for making the booking...

Just email them when you have it... :)

If you are using the Gothenburg clinic, I believe they aren't as strict with having the number when booking. Allow for atleast 14 days between the medical and the interview booking..

Good luck
