Hey there

I've been in Mississippi a little over a month now, and seeing as I now have a bit of spare time and we're getting married in just under 5 weeks time, I thought I should start applying for my social security number. So I printed out all the forms as per the guide on this site and went to the office. as this is Mississippi, the lady behind the counter had never processed a SSN for a K1 fiance visa holder, but she assured me that she knew what she was doing..... Anyway instead of being told that I'd recieve a SSN card in 2 weeks, she gave me a sheet saying that ' we cannot issue you a social security card until we check the documents you gave to show your citzenship or alien status

. We will check with the agency that issued them. This will take about 4 weeks.'

Has anyone else had this? I tried to show her the form saying that I was entitled to a SSN number but she said that 'the computer says no', or something alongs those lines!

I'm not sure if I should be worried or not - I thought i'd got done with all the tricky stuff! Any advice much appreciated.

James

I wouln't worry- my wait for status verification wasn't that bad-I had the same letter. I applied March 7th and received my SS card April 2nd. Having said that, I called the SS office on March 26th just to check the status of my card and was told they hadn't run in through the DHS system yet, so call and double check-sometimes they get very busy and need to be reminded. After I called I had a letter 2 days later saying my card would be coming within 2 weeks-was it coincidence?-I think not! Difference may be that I already had a SS # in my maiden name and was switching to my married name-but I still had to have the verification done too! so give the SS office 2 full work weeks from when you applied and call just to check up!

Good advice.

However, I've found that actually getting through to speak to someone at the SSA is nearly impossible

We tried to just get Claudeth's name changed on her card after we got married and they told us we had to wait until we received something offical from the USCIS. When she received her EAD we went back and it took about six weeks to get the new card.
