Boston does not stamp passports following green card expiration

Heads-up, folks - I was just at my local district office this morning to get a passport stamp after my green card expired this past weekend. I will be traveling overseas next month and wanted to make sure I won't run into any problems at POE. The immigration officer explained that they no longer use stamps since the NOA letter extending my green card status should now be sufficient. Though I don't think this is true for all districts - aren't there some district ffices who do the stamp anyway?

So if you are thinking of going to the Government Center just for a stamp extneding your permanent resident status, save yourself the visit.

Other than that, VSC seems to be still in hibernation. I have not heard anyhting since my fingerprinting in February...

Best,

My husband thankfully just got his passport stamped this morning at the Miami office. It sounded like the officer was hesitant in doing so, but ended up stamping his passport after he filled out a form with the specifics of losing his greencard.:)

I thought we would most likely be turned down and they would only stamp if he was traveling, as in your case... I hope Boston's right and everything goes smoothly for you.

Thanks for the report, BC.

I think if your travel plans are imminent and you have still not received your NOA, that you might have a better shot at getting a stamp. But the offices are reluctant to give them out unless you have an urgent burning need (and not the kind a doctor sees to!).

Hi guys,

I went to Atlanta local office (falls under TSC )with my 2 year greendcard (expires in May 1st week) & one year extension letter, for passport stamp. they did not stamp in my passport....they said its not necessary, " the expired card with the one year extension letter is good enough".............

thats my story.....

They do not stamp in Anchorage either. Got the same story you did.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.
