We filed for our 10 year green card extension (I-751) in January 2017. We received the one year extension which will expire in January 2018. My wife is Filipina and we want to travel to the Bahamas at Christmas to visit my brother who works there. I read where Philippine Passport holders need a VISA to enter the Bahamas??? I hope my wife can get a Visa to the Bahamas and then we have no troubles leaving the USA and reentering the USA??? We also will be going on a 11 day cruise after the Bahamas. I would not like it if my wife were NOT allowed reentry into the USA where she lives and works.

Mike, another issue that you might run into is even getting the visa approved. A lot of places require that the residence card not expire within 15-30 days of departure back to the US. I couldn't find a specific policy for the Bahamas, but they can still deny you for that.

Has anyone here tried to travel outside the US since they filed for adjustment of status? Technically, my green card has expired in April 2017, but has been extended for another year. The letter said we could travel during this time, but has anyone actually done so while waiting?

We traveled to Jamaica in May and my husband had no problems at all.  Jamaica and the US were very aware of what the letter was and we breezed through immigration on both ends.  Best wishes in your travels!

Hello January 2017 filers,

I received the letter stating that the conditional resident status has been extended for a period of one year but I'm a little bit confused because in the letter it doesn't specify from which day the conditional resident status has been extended.  I would like to know if it is extended from the receipt date stated on the letter (in this case January 12, 2017) or if it extended one more year after the day that the GC expired (April 9, 2017.  Also,  when we should get an info pass and get the stamp in the passport extending the resident status in case we don't receive the GC during the one year extension.  Thanks for your help.

My wife (whose the one under AOS) and I have traveled to Canada via car in May (after her GC expired). We had no issues with either border crossing. We're also traveling to Europe in a month and she required a Schengen visa. She had her appointment this past week. She told me that the consular officer first said they couldn't accept the letter as proof of re-entry, but then he asked his boss who said it was okay. She then got approved and was told that the rest of the Schengen area had to approve (but that there should be no issues). We'll find out for sure this week when the passport comes back.

Thanks so much for sharing! and good luck with the rest of your travel plans!

Don't quote me on this; I could be wrong, but in my understanding, the 1-year extension applies to the actual date on your green card. Essentially, our green cards didn't expire until April 2017, but we needed to file for removal of conditional status in January, right?

I agree....

There has been some speculation as to whether the expiration date is 1 year from the date of the Extension Letter or 1 year from the expiration date of the Conditional Green Card but I too believe it is the latter - i.e 1 year from the Conditional GC expiration....

Thank you so much!

My wife and the kids just came back from Medellin after spending a month.. Zero issues.. Not even sent to Secondary Inspection...

She presented the expired Green Card along with the letter and  her passport, the officer processed her like any other Permanent Resident and then welcomed her home with a smile!

Hi everyone,

I just got a letter in my mail today for the i-751 interview. Doesn't provide much information just gives a date and time for the interview and asks me to bring along my spouse, my conditional green card, the letter, ID, proof of bonafide marriage and 2 passport size photographs. Anyone else gotten the same letter??

So, my manager at work had an appointment with USCIS. His wife is going through an I-751 process which started in August of last year so he gives me status updates since he's a few months ahead of us. They still have not gotten the 10 yr GC (hence the appointment).

They got the one year extension stamp. The officer said it's going slow because they are understaffed and there have been a lot of fraudulent applications which have required more screening/time. He also said they are probably 6-8 months away from getting their GC, meaning, we'd be about a year away from today.

Did your status get updated online? I think so far everyone has an incorrect status of fees waived etc etc..
