People think that Medicaid is considered "public charge", BUT IT'S NOT!

https://www.uscis.gov/green-card/green-card-processes-and-procedures/public-charge

It will not affect your naturalization later on if you received food stamps for a while and stopped using when you got your work permit.

DO NOT APPLY FOR CASH ASSISTANCE,  USCIS can deny  your GC because of this ok

Thanks Sandra, I applied for cash assistance. I've been getting it since November. Now I'm scared. I couldn't avoid taking it.

It's not been changed, if applies to different category of abuse, please read the header and the instructions along with it and you'll be fine. It's been out close to a month now I guess.

me too. I got the cash benefit since december. and i'm still getting food stamp. WIC.  Meicaid after I got my EAD (but I'm not working, Because DMV cant renew my DL without GC. So I cant have a car). But all of them are only for 1 person which is my daughter since I'm not a citizen. And I'm living in the free housing too. I'm sooo worried now.

armorcannon you won't have a problem because you are getting the money for your daughter and I assume that she is a U.S Citizen. She probably is a minor and you filed the application for cash assistance on her behalf then there is no problem ok.

YOU ARE NOT RECEIVING CASH ASSISTANCE, YOUR DAUGHTER IS RECEIVING. When answering the question to USCIS "are you receiving any public benefit" and you have JUST MEDICAID FOR YOU,   your answer should be  "NO" and you should explain that the cash assistance application was filed on behalf of your daughter.

RonandJay please read above the explanation I gave for Amorcannonand see if your case is like his/her case. But if you are receiving cash assistance for you then you should stop receiving otherwise you will have your GC denied.

In the U.S we have shelters for victims of domestic violence. If you can't afford to pay rent/food you should move to a shelter.

Thanks for making this issue clear. I definitely will not be applying for cash assistance. Even food stamps is a no! If you can avoid it guys, do so!

Thank you for your advice Sandra. We are blessed to have you. No, my case is not like him/her. I had bills before (car loan etc.) and I didn't know how else I would've been able to pay them. It is only $200 per month, but it has truly helped. I live with a family member, and they aren't able to assist me financially as well. I had written to the VAWA unit, explaining that I truly didn't want to be a burden of the USA. I am not sure if that will help. I hope it does, I have been through too much. I will stop taking it IMMEDIATELY!

Do you think the letter I wrote might help?

Does it help that has only been a few months that I've been taking it?

Ohh Thank you for replying me. I don't even have Medicaid. Medicaid if for her too. Yes she's citizen. I only had emergency medicaid when I were pregnant with her. When I filed back in May I only proofed them Food stamp for I-912. My lawyers asked me bunch questions like my income and expenses atm. So will they find out about the cash benefit and ask me question again? When will it happen?  Thanks.
