Some situations are eligible.

In all honesty will there be an issue with security reasons because of your nuclear weapons background? You might want to clear this up first....but finding reliable info might be a challenge. I could be wrong but it just brings of red flags with you even mentioning a nuclear weapon history with prior jobs.

Since you mention you are an engineer, you might want to look into an EB2-NIW as well. Since you have worked on a special field that might qualify you for a Nation Interest Waiver, which then would allow you to self petition and also cover your partner.

But that can only be determined by a specialized immigration lawyer in your field.

This forum is mainly family based immigration. You might look around on the trackitt forum instead, where you find plenty of engineers as well.

Good luck!

That is... really not true. Like, really.

If you want to move there permanently there is just a couple of options:

1. Marry an US citizen.

2. Win a visa lottery.

(I know there is also a sponsoring through a relative but I see that OP doesn't have USC family).

OP, you're really ignoring all the people here who are trying to explain to you that its extremely hard to get a work visa. And its even HARDER to turn that work visa into a permanent residency.

No, THAT's not true. There are other options. EB categories, for example. It is quite easy and quick to get a GC via EB2 categories if you find an employer who will sponsor you. One can also self-sponsor in certain categories. Having strong credentials in certain fields of engineering can make it relatively easy to get a GC (EB1A, EB2-NIW, EB2 through employer, etc). So the OP is right, don't assume that there are very few options.

I like how easy it all sounds in your post. :)

Basically, you cannot move to the USA just like that. Those are your option.

1. You have a close US citizen relative willing to sponsor you. If yes - then you have to marry your partner and once you move to the US and become a legal resident, you can sponsor him/her. Takes couple of years.

2. You find a US employer to sponsor you for a work visa. Which is only temporary visa. But based on your skills, its probably not possible.

3. Win a visa lottery.

4. That's it. Unless you or your partner are USC. Then its a different story.

Oh.

Don't forget about tourist visa (B2) for your 6 months road trip. Also don't make any solid plans. Immigration officers USUALLY gives 6 months stay, but they can give you a two weeks, month or two months or whatever as well.

The option of an E2 visa is not on your list.
