Name change question?

My fiance' and I have our marriage liscence and are planning on getting married on the 14th. We're a bit unorthdox in that he wants to take -my- last name. I assume that this works the same way, regardless of which partner takes which name. My question is, how do you go about doing it? Is it something to be filled out on the marriage liscence?

I live in the state of Illinois, Cook County. There is a section for 'name of bride' and 'name of groom' that has to be filled out on the wedding day. Is that where we'd put the new name?

If a man changes his last name with marriage, does it also work the same way as women, where they can continue to use their 'maiden' name (bachelor name?) for some things if they chose? As in, we don't want to have to go through the trouble of changing his name on his passport, but we were planning on using the new name for his green card application and such.

Can anyone give any insight?

We got married in Hawaii. On the form it asks for bride's full name after marriage, and groom's full name after marriage. Either or both parties may change their name.

This stuff is all very state specific however, and THE BEST SOURCE OF INFO are the people in charge of this stuff where you live. You should give them a call or pay them a visit. (:

Cheers!

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

You have to put your current names down on wedding day. Then after you are married, he can switch his last name.. but correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't he need to fill out some official forms to change his name?

I believe most instances of a name change (aside from a woman taking her married name) has to go through some court proceeding.

Google it!
