Not sure that we can put together a formal engagement ceremony prior to her interview. I have pictures of us with her family at Angkor Wat and I submitted a letter of intent that was notarized. We did dress up in traditional outfits to attend a family event while I was there in December.

So, not having a formal engagement ceremony would be grounds for visa denial?

Does anyone know if the interview is conducted in Khmer, English, or both?

The interview can be in Khmer or English. The counselor knows both Khmer and English. English is not a requirement. It may improve your chances though.

She is learning English and understands more each day. She is not real comfortable and confident in English at this point though.

Thanks

I like to help all Cambodian people. The government is corrupt, and the living conditions in Cambodia is poor. I am very happy to find my true love in Cambodia.

I'm happy to help any Cambodia through the visa process. And, I will not ever ask for any money.

Thanks for everything you have answered and helped me understand. Our interview is within the next few weeks and I am a little nervous, but I sent everything they requested and more. I am also working with her everyday to review possible questions and she knows all the information about me. I just want her here with me so we will both be happy and begin enjoying our lives together.

Niels,

Would you recommend including Western Union receipts as part of the info my fiance takes to the embassy?

Careful about those receipts. It is not Shenan's wife but fiancée. The issue with providing evidence of financial support Shenan is that is can be misunderstood. It could be taken as a sign of your commitment or it could be taken as a payment for services. If you search through the threads here on VJ, you'll see that it's recommended again and and again not to rely on this type of evidence. Best to have ample evidence of communication e.g. emails, phone records, and snail mail going both ways, meeting e.g. photographs, boarding passes, hotel bills, etc. and any other proof of ongoing relationship.

It'll be fine for Shenan since Shenan sent the money, not the other way around. Some embassies are different. The new US Embassy in Cambodia has new employees with alot of common sense. Their approval rate is higher than the denial rate. Thanks for your advice though.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm helping my BIL with a k-1 visa for his fiancee from Cambodia. Just got word the US embassy in Phnom Penh denied the visa app with a 221g this morning. The box with "being returned to USCIS because the interviewer believes the marriage is a sham" was checked. :(

Next steps if any? Procedurally, where does this leave us? Advice?

Thanks.
