Hello everyone!

I am getting a bit nervous and would appreciate your comments on the following.

I entered the US on CR1 visa about 2,5 weeks ago. From what I understood and from what the officer told me, I am now supposed just to sit and wait for my green card to arrive. Is that correct? Or do I need to urgently file any additional applications to notify them that I entered the US?

Also, if I am doing everything correctly, then when is the green card supposed to arrive? How long does it usually take to receive it after one enters the US on CR1 visa?

And the last but not the least - do I uderstand correctly that I cannot travel before I receive my green card? I mean, I can travel but I won't be able to come back to the US without the actual green card. Is my understanding correct?

Thank you. Your comments are highly appreciated.

Did you pay the $165 on ELIS?

You can enter and leave as you wish while waiting for the Green Card, the stamp in your passport next to your visa turns it into a temporary I-551 for a year.

One extra thing you could do is go down to the SSA and apply for your Social Security card. Even if you checked the option to receive one on your DS-260, a lot of the time the request never gets sent to the SSA and people end up having to apply in person.

ROC from CR-1 visa (Green Card expiration date was Nov 24th 2016)

Link to the evidence I submitted. Be sure to send evidence spanning your entire marriage (especially for K-1) or as far back as you can. Just one or two bank statements will not cut it. I primarily focused on the two years of living here since I came in on a CR-1. If you don't have the fundamentals (i.e. joint accounts/policies), you can explain why in the covering letter. E.g. "While we do not have joint utilities, we both contribute to them from our joint bank account".

September 26th 2016: I-751 package sent to CSC

September 28th 2016: Package delivered
September 30th 2016: Check cashed
October 3rd 2016: NOA1 received with receipt date of 09/28/16
November 3rd 2016: Biometrics received with appointment date of 11/14/16.
November 14th 2016: Attended biometrics appointment
October 30th 2017: Infopass appointment to get I-551 stamp
February 26th 2018: I-751 case number (aka the NOA1 receipt number) becomes trackable
March 14th 2018: Submitted service request due to being outside of processing time.

March 15th 2018: ROC approved. 535 days (1 year, 5 months and 17 days)

March 29th 2018: Card being produced

April 4th 2018: Card mailed out

April 6th 2018: Card in hand. Has incorrect "resident since" date. Submitted service request on I-751 case (typographical error on permanent resident card) and an I-90 online.

April 2018 - August 7th 2018: Tons of service requests, emails and now senator involvement to get my corrected green card back because what the heck, USCIS. Also some time in May I sent a letter to Potomac telling them I want to withdraw my I-90 since CSC were handling it.

August 8th 2018: Card in production thanks to the direct involvement of Senator Sherrod Brown's team

August 13th 2018: Card mailed

August 15th 2018: Card in hand with correct date. :joy:

October 31st 2018: Potomac sends out a notice stating they have closed out my I-90 per my request. Yay for no duplicate card drama.

Once you fill out the forms, and you put your address all you can do now is wait ,in the Airport they probably told you wait till 6 months to get your Green Card, they told me that too and within 48 days i received my card in the mail .

Secondly you can travel with your Passport the CR1 visa is valid for one year . But what they probably mean is you have to stay in the USA for a certain amount of days. Don't know the figure.

Hope i was able to help you.

Hi I received my GC after 7 months. The stamp on your passport is a temporary I-551 and its good for a year. That's basically your GC until you receive your physical card in the mail,

FYI, I was able to work, get a social security card and DMV just using that.

Thank you all for your prompt responses! It is indeed really helpful!

Yes, we paid the 165$ fee even before I left to the US, so it should be fine.

Oh, good news that I can travel, I thought I need to wait for the actual document to arrive :dancing:

I actually received my SSN several years ago when I came to the US as a student on work and travel program. They say you receive it once for a life-time. I just need to update my last name on it cause I changed it upon marriage.

Thank you again!

Oh, actually one more thing. Maybe someone has experience with that?

So if I travel with my CR1 visa and the stamp in the passport before I receive the actual "green card", do I need to go to general tourists line or can I go to permanent residents line?

It is not that crucial, just the second line is usually much shorter :)

You should still go have it updated at some point to let them know your status has changed to permanent resident and they'll send you a new card without "valid for work only with DHS authorization" stamped on it. It's silly, but my DMV office was very stubborn about it for example (not to go into details).

P.S. It took four months for my card to arrive in the mail, I managed to get a job just fine using the visa as the temporary green card.
