My fiance heard that since she had to do the TB culture test that she will have to do a followup testing in America ?

Is this true?

What happens if she were to turn out + for that test?

Do they send her home?

Do they treat her here? AND if so, how much does that cost?

There is nothing for you to do for any follow-up once in the USA unless the County Health Care contacts you.

Initially there are 3 sputum samples collected over 3 days. This occurs sometime around a week or so after the initial x-ray shows signs of past or present TB. Those samples are used to determine if the suspected case is in fact TB. It only takes one of those samples to go positive for the case to be classified as TB positive. We received our call from SLEC about 3 weeks after the sputum collection.

After positive determination, SLEC does a series of 3 sputum tests during the 6 month DOT process. Each test is 2 samples. The final 2 sputum samples are collected at the end of the 5th month of DOT. Those are taken over 2 days, 24 hours apart. That culture will marinade for 2 months. The DOT is weekdays at SLEC and they're closed on weekends and holidays. There's a return trip required at the end of the 7th month to get the final sputum results, redo medical and to get the treatment paperwork.

Bed-spacer close to SLEC will cost approximately 5,000 a month. Apartment is about 15,000 plus utilities. We chose the apartment route and budget about 30,000 a month for everything.

It's a 9 month process from the point of X-ray detection if the sputum is positive. That's if all goes well.

A little background

Tuberculosis, also known as TB, is a disease caused by bacteria spread through the air from one person to another. Commonly, it attacks the lungs, but also other parts of the body. It is estimated that one third of the world's population is infected with TB, but it can lay latent, meaning not everyone develops the active disease. Persons with latent TB do not spread the disease unless it is active in the body. Of all TB cases in the world, 85 percent occur in 22 countries. Of these 22 countries, 9 are in sub-Saharan Africa and over 1.5 million cases of TB occur in Africa each year. In Africa TB/HIV co-infection is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in Africa. A 3-5 drug regimen using Directly Observed Therapy – Short course (DOTS) over a 6-8 month period is the standard of treatment for TB. Treatment failures result in drug resistance including multi-drug resistance.

If the culture test comes back negative I have never heard of anyone needing to complete another test in the USA. If positive I have heard where a follow-up is required by the county health department.

If future testing is required and found positive you would complete medication in the USA, you would not be deported.

It's to bad they still do the 6 or 9 month treatments, I personally work as an RN and had been exposed to TB as some point (never figured out when) and I did the 12 week DOT dose of Isoniazid and Rifapentine regimen. From what I've read it can't be used for people with HIV/AIDs, somoene infected with INH or rifampin- resistant M.tuberculosis, or a pregnant woman or woman expecting to become pregnant while taking this medication. It would really save time and money....

SLEC is basically a con game to get money. Have you seen the little building it is in, in the middle of the Red Light district of Ermita. They charge US prices for Philippines services.

Ya that's the ticket... the medical has nothing to do with CDC requirements ... it is all about the Benjamins.

SLEC does medical for Australia, Canada, New Zealand as well as USA. Prices vary depending on country

So yes they are set up to get money, and I am sure US applicants probably pay the most.

And all those other countries have equivalent to CDC that require the medical.

You can get a medical with x-rays in the USA for $322 ??? Where at QUACKS R Us ?

Reality is the medical is a requirement, same as the visa fee ... but no one is getting their visas without paying.

Yes, I can. Just have to be smart, That service in Philippines should cost no more than 5 to 8K pesos at the most.

If SLEC wasn't set up to be a money maker, they would allow medical to be done at other locations. If you spend enough time in Philippines you will have a much better understanding of the culture there and how SLEC is just another way to separate money and usually foreign derived to help pay for something in Philippines.

You shut down Western Union and Money Gram to Philippines and the country would crumble..
