Some good answers here. The one thing I'm surprised at is that no one as of yet has mentioned JFK, I frequently see him top polls of 'best President'

I like JFK, but personally don't feel he was president long enough to be considered "effective", unfortunately.

True - would've been interesting to see what he could have potentially got done in two terms!

Totally agree . Not saying he was bad or good , but most of his legend and mystique is because he got shot and had a hot wife, who had naked pictures etc

Also I think his legacy will be stained for the Bay of Pigs stuff, which wasn't directly his fault - but ultimately he did execute it, no matter how much he backtracked and realised he'd been suckered after the fact.

At the bottom would be Jimmy Carter, probably the biggest disaster for the country since Woodrow Wilson. Reagan & Eisenhower would be at the top.

Carter is the worst, Reagan is the best in my lifetime.

Obama will probably rank one notch above Carter, If Trump comes in and kicks tail and takes name like Reagan did, it will make history record Obama failure.

Time will tell.

Out of interest what don't you like about Obama? Not trying to start an argument or disagree, I'm just curious. I've noticed with Obama people either tend to really like him or really not

I don't know anybody who voted for him or liked him. He seemed to be like either by people on the west coast or in the far northern states, Here in Texas he is very disliked.

I think this distinction was pointed out earlier in the thread, but I think the OP had intended to ask purely about effectiveness. Not about personally liking or disliking a President. Whether you like what the President does has no bearing with how "effective" he was. Effectiveness is based on what the President set out to do, and whether they achieved their own goals.

On that topic, I agree that the Obama Presidency was not a very effective one. I would also rank it in the lower half of my list of "effective" Presidents, especially post-WW2 era. Now the issue of "effectiveness" is difficult because really it is a question about the Federal Government as a whole, and not an individual President. Our system of government is set up such that the President isn't the primary legislater, so why they are a powerful force they aren't the only agent of change. I think one of the things that makes the Obama Presidency one of the least effective is that the legislative branch was also quite ineffective. So taken as a whole, not a lot got done.

Now as to whether I personally like Obama, I do. I don't think he has been that effective, but I think he seems to me the kind of guy who I would gladly hang out with. He seems like a nice guy, and a good father. I also happen to align with him personally on many issues (mostly social). I do think he generally cares about the country. I think a lot of people in this country are going so far "left" or "right" that they end up believing (and sincerely believing it) that people who disagree with them "hate" the country or want to "destroy it" etc... I don't think anyone on the left or the right hate America. I think anyone who wants to dedicate their life to politics does so because they believe in certain things and think that they would be positive changes for the country. There are just differences of opinion on what is positive change and where the country should go. I also don't think Trump "hates" American either or wants to negatively impact the country. I think he may care a little bit more about personal power/influence than some past Presidents have, but I do also think he wants to see the country thrive. I just don't agree with him on some of his "ideas" for America (or ideas of his supporters).
