Thank you both for the information.

As I haven't had a SSN yet, can anyone tell me... Do you HAVE to get a SSN to use the employment card?

If not, is there less restrictions without a SSN?

Excuse my ignorance here.

Congrats on your EAD. You will need your SSN for almost everything in the US. It is your basic identifier.

You will need it to start work next to your EAD or your GC.

The letter says to bring everything the application you originally submitted contained. So, if anyone didn't make a copy of their original packet, be sure to do that at some point before your interview. We didn't make a copy because we mailed it in Dec 22 and were in a rush to do so to avoid the fee hike <_<

Hi guys just an update. So I received my EAD card in the mail March 23 on day 102. Went to the ssn office to do my social security this morning. I actually got my number on spot because I did have one from 2008 when I usually come up on j1 but lost the card and never remembered the number.

march is definitely our month. @lleaka looking forward in getting your good news as well

Hi bronxnyc. Thanks for the info. I have an SSN card from my J1 days too. It says it's only for work authorization. So when I get my EAD card (hopefully soon), will I get a new SSN card or will I just need to re activate my existing card?

Your card is good to go. Nothing will change until you get the gc. I am in a similar situation.

I would assume most of the people on this thread do have an SSN card already.

Getting a SSN with the EAD will have the DHS restriction mentioned on the card.

I would apply for another SSN once I get my GC to have the DHS restriction term removed from the card

Just applied for a SSN with the EAD yesterday. You mentioned a DHS restriction. May I know what it is? Just curious. Thank you!

I just read the thread and people here are saying only for work.. Does that mean i cant use it for medical insurance?

Were you able to get a medical insurance during your J1 days eventhough your SSN says "only for work authorization"?

It means that without showing your EAD card, you are not authorized to work. I have that on my SSN since I got it through J1 visa. J1 visa doesn't allow my to work anywhere except at the place that hired me and I cannot get an EAD under J1.

I have medical insurance now through my job on J1 visa. SSN doesn't affect that in anyway.

Thank you for those links, I was also wondering what the restriction thing was about. That makes sense now.

I haven't had a previous ssn and was wondering if they'd give me one when I go to the ssn office or if I'll have to wait for the card to be sent. I hope I get my EAD mailed soon and get this step done and then it's just more waiting for interview. eeek.

Since you don't have a SSN, then go ahead and get one using your EAD.

Once you get your GC, you can go back and get your SSN replace by another one without the restriction wording on it
