Hey guys hope everyone is having a good week!

Does anyone know if im going to need to present a passport at my AOS interview? I need to change my name on my old passport but the consulate wants to take in my old passport  I dont really feel comfortable being in the country with no passport and a pending application for a passport which is going to take 4-6 months to process according to the South African consulate.

Do you really need to change your name soon or is it something that can wait?? I have a few South African friends and they both told me it does take 5-6 months to receive a new passport ( we are in NYC if that makes a difference ).

Otherwise, I'd recommend a consular id and/or a national card if your country makes those. But still , I have both and most places don't recognize them.

I did manage to keep my old French passport when I explained I needed to keep proof of my old visas.

Hope that helps.

I believe you can book plane tickets with your passport name aka maiden. However, my travel agent advised to always carry a certified copy of your marriage certificate when you travel if you need evidence. But your plane ticket names should absolutely match your passport.

I confirm what mthldou says. I have taken the plane 3 times since my wedding. I used my married name to book for the both of us but my French passport still has my maiden name ( I haven't changed it because of the pending Aos , I used my maiden name) . I always take a marriage certificate in case , even though I haven't had any isssues .

edit: my married name is my maiden name + husbands added to it . So there's my birth surname like on my passport.

Wait , do you mean you haven't received any biometric appointment letter at all ??

That can't be right. You sent your file before most of us here .

I know, I've been extremely frustrated. I see everyone getting their biometrics, but I'm still here waiting. I'm not sure if it's because they waived my fees for both applications but it's literally 2 months now... I've contacted the Ombudsman at USCIS but who knows how long that's gonna take. I'm thinking if my file was assigned to someone who's on vacation or something.

Ms Green,

Have you tried calling uscis ??

Can you track your case ?? It should say something like " we sent you a notice " . Does yours say anything ??

Yes I called them but they cannot give any information because of the type of visa I'm applying for. They submitted a service request but I assume it will take them 30 days to respond to it if not longer. I've seen many VAWA applicants are not getting their NOA's. I'm wondering if anyone else is having the same issue, but I guess it's just all the people that applied for VAWA...
